2 Samuel 22 – David’s Song of Thanksgiving

1
David spoke these words of this song to the LORD on the day when the LORD had delivered him from the grasp of all his enemies and from the grasp of Saul.

2
He said: The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer;

3
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior; You save me from violence.

4
I call on the LORD, who is worthy of praise; so I am saved from my enemies.

5
For the waves of death surrounded me, the torrents of the grave came upon me,

6
the cords of Sheol entangled me, the snares of death were set before me.

7
In my distress I called on the LORD; to my God I called. And He heard my voice from His temple, and my cry for help came into His ears.

8
Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of the heavens quaked and shook, because He burned with anger.

9
Smoke rose from His nostrils, fire devoured from His mouth, glowing coals blazed from Him.

10
He bent the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under His feet.

11
He rode on a cherub and flew; He appeared on the wings of the wind.

12
He made darkness around Him His shelter: dark rain clouds, thick clouds.

13
From the brightness before Him, coals of fire were kindled.

14
The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High made His voice heard.

15
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning bolts, and routed them.

16
Then the channels of the sea were seen, the foundations of the world were laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.

17
He reached down from on high, took hold of me, and drew me out of the great waters.

18
He delivered me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.

19
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support;

20
He brought me out into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me.

21
The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; He rewarded me according to the cleanness of my hands,

22
for I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not turned away from my God as the wicked do.

23
For all His laws were before me, and I did not turn aside from His statutes;

24
I was blameless before Him and kept myself from guilt.

25
Therefore the LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight.

26
With the faithful You show Yourself faithful; with the blameless You show Yourself blameless,

27
with the pure You show Yourself pure, but with the crooked You show Yourself shrewd.

28
The afflicted people You save, but Your eyes are against the proud, that You may bring them low.

29
For You are my lamp, O LORD, and the LORD lights up my darkness.

30
For by You I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.

31
As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

32
For who is God besides the LORD, and who is a rock besides our God?

33
God is my strong refuge, and He makes my way straight;

34
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me on the heights;

35
He trains my hands for battle, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

36
You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, and Your gentleness has made me great.

37
You have made a broad place for my steps, and my feet have not slipped.

38
I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until I had finished them;

39
I consumed them and crushed them, so that they did not rise again; they fell under my feet.

40
You have girded me with strength for battle; You have brought down under me those who rose against me.

41
You made my enemies turn their backs to me, and I destroyed those who hated me.

42
They cried for help, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but He did not answer them.

43
I ground them fine as the dust of the earth; I crushed them and trampled them like mud in the streets.

44
You delivered me from the strife of my people; You kept me as head over the nations; a people I had not known served me;

45
foreigners submitted to me; as soon as their ears heard, they obeyed me.

46
Foreigners faded away and came trembling out of their strongholds.

47
The LORD lives! Blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation,

48
God, who has given me vengeance and brought nations under my rule,

49
and who has delivered me from my enemies. You have also exalted me above those who rose against me; You have rescued me from the violent.

50
Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD, among the nations, and I will sing praises to Your name.

51
He grants great salvation to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and to his descendants forever.
