David said, “Is there still anyone left of Saul’s family, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

Now Saul’s family had a servant named Ziba. He was summoned to David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” He answered, “I am your servant.”

Then the king said, “Is there not still someone left of Saul’s family, that I may show him the kindness of God?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is lame in both feet.”

The king asked him, “Where is he?” Ziba said to the king, “He is at the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.”

Then King David sent and had him brought from the house of Machir son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar.

Mephibosheth son of Jonathan son of Saul came to David and fell on his face and bowed down. David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Here is your servant.”

David said to him, “Do not be afraid, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake; I will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather, and you shall always eat at my table.”

Then Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should regard a dead dog like me?”

Then the king called Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I give to your master’s grandson.

You and your sons and your servants shall work the land for him, and you shall bring in its produce, so that your master’s grandson may have food. But Mephibosheth your master’s grandson shall always eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

Then Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do exactly as my lord the king commands his servant.” So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.

Mephibosheth had a young son named Micah. All who lived in Ziba’s house were servants of Mephibosheth.

So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table. And he was lame in both feet.
