In this fast-paced age, we are used to instant results. Fast food, online shopping with next-day delivery, and even information can be obtained in seconds. Yet the spiritual journey never works in an instant way. Faith does not grow overnight, but through a lifelong process with God.
The Bible describes spiritual life as a long journey, not a short leap. Paul wrote, “I have finished the good fight, I have reached the finish line and I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). That means mature faith is built through consistency, struggle, and perseverance. Just as an athlete trains every day, so we must train ourselves in prayer, the Word, and obedience.
Often we want quick change. We pray for problems to disappear immediately or for bad habits to vanish at once. Yet God shapes us through small and faithful daily processes. For example, learning to forgive one step at a time, choosing honesty even when it is difficult, or continuing to pray when the heart feels dry. All of these form the character of Christ in us little by little.
Jesus Himself used the picture of a mustard seed. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is larger than the other garden plants and becomes a tree” (Matthew 13:31-32). Spiritual growth begins with something small, but if it is cared for, it will become great and strong.
The spiritual journey is often full of challenges as well. There are times when we feel as if we have gone backward or failed. But do not forget, God is patient with us. Philippians 1:6 says, “Being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” So when we grow weary in the journey of faith, remember that God is at work even when we do not see the results right away.
Spiritual life is not a sprint, but a marathon. It takes daily faithfulness, consistent prayer, and small acts of obedience that slowly shape the character of Christ. Do not give up just because you do not see instant results. God is growing something beautiful in us, step by step.
Lord, teach me to be patient in my spiritual journey. Help me to be faithful in the small things each day and not give up when the results are not yet visible. Shape me according to the character of Christ, and make my life fruitful for Your glory. Amen.
