Abraham: Learning to Trust Before Seeing

Abraham is known as the father of believers for a reason. God called him to leave his homeland and go to a land he had never seen (Genesis 12:1). Without a map, without certainty, he held only to God’s promise. Abraham’s faith was not about waiting for proof first, but believing before seeing.

The greatest challenge came when God promised that Abraham would have descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, even though he and Sarah were old and had no children (Genesis 15:5-6). From a human perspective, this was impossible. Yet the Bible records, “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6). This is the essence of faith: trusting God’s promise even when our eyes do not see the way out.

Abraham’s obedience was tested even further when God asked for Isaac, the promised son, to be offered as a sacrifice (Genesis 22:2). This situation seemed to contradict God’s own promise. Yet Abraham remained obedient because he believed that God was able to provide a way even in the most impossible circumstances.

True faith is not merely believing in the promise, but also believing in the Person who gives the promise.

Abraham’s journey teaches us that true faith is not about waiting until everything is clear before stepping forward, but having the courage to walk even when we see only one step. 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, “For we live by faith, not by sight.” When we learn to believe before seeing, we are actually surrendering full control of our lives into God’s hands.

Today, we may also face uncertain situations: prayers unanswered, God’s promises seeming distant, or paths not yet clearly visible. Learn from Abraham: do not wait for proof before believing, but trust in the faithful God. In time, we will see the fulfillment of His promises, for God never breaks His word.

Lord, teach us to trust You even before we see the results. Strengthen our faith to remain steadfast in awaiting Your promises, and enable us to step forward in obedience even when the path ahead is unclear. Amen.
