Many people feel proud when their lives are used by God, whether through ministry, miracles, or great works visible to human eyes. However, the Bible reminds us that being a tool in God’s hands is not a reason to exalt oneself, but an opportunity to become more humble.
Jesus once said, “Likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’” (Luke 17:10). In other words, being used by God is not because of our greatness, but because of His grace.
The story of Gideon is an example. At first, he felt small and unworthy, yet God chose him to lead Israel against the Midianites. Even when the army was reduced to only 300 men, victory still occurred, so it would be clear that it was not Gideon’s strength, but God’s power (Judges 7:2). God intentionally uses the weak to shame the strong, so that glory returns only to Him.
The greatest danger when being used by God is spiritual pride. We can begin to feel more important, more spiritual, or more valuable than others.
However, John the Baptist himself said, “He must become greater; I must become less.” (John 3:30). This is the attitude of a true servant: to direct all attention only to Christ, not to oneself.
Being used by God is a grace, not an achievement. We are merely clay jars that hold great spiritual treasure (2 Corinthians 4:7). All glory, honor, and praise must return to God. We cannot boast, because without God we are nothing.
Rather than being proud because we are used, it is better to be grateful for still being given the opportunity to serve. Every work that comes forth through our lives is only a reflection of God’s grace working within our weakness. Our task is only one: to remain humble, faithful, and to direct all glory back to the Source.
Lord, forgive us if sometimes we feel proud because we are used by You. Remind us that everything that happens is only because of Your grace. Teach us to remain humble, faithful, and always return all glory only to You. Amen.
