Moments like these are often called “coincidences.” But the question is: do coincidences really exist? Or is everything already part of God’s plan?
Through the Lens of Science: A World Full of Possibilities
From a scientific perspective, coincidences are often explained as the result of probability, the chance of events happening through various combinations of circumstances. For example, the possibility of meeting an old friend at the airport is calculated based on travel frequency, departure location, and timing.
Statistics say that events that seem rare can actually happen naturally; it is just that the human mind tends to remember what is unique and surprising. This is called confirmation bias.
However, science also acknowledges that the universe is too complex and orderly to stand on coincidence alone. So the question arises: who designed those “possibilities”?
Through the Lens of Faith: Nothing Is by Chance
In the Bible, the concept of “coincidence” is almost never used in the context of God’s will. On the contrary, everything happens under His control, including things that seem small or unimportant.

A striking example is found in the story of Ruth and Boaz. In Ruth 2:3, it says that Ruth “happened to come” to the field belonging to Boaz. But as the story continues, we know this was not merely a coincidence it was part of God’s great plan.
Coincidence vs. Providence
The more fitting term in the Christian faith is not “coincidence,” but providence, meaning the way God sustains and governs His creation according to His plan.
Sometimes, this providence looks very ordinary. Yet behind a “small coincidence,” God is arranging the puzzle of your life. Not everything has to be spectacular to be part of His will.
Conclusion: Learning to Trust, Not to Chase Patterns
Do coincidences exist? Perhaps in the logic of the world, yes. But for believers, there is no event that escapes God’s attention. We are not called to connect every dot in life, but to trust that even when we do not understand, God is still at work.
As written in Romans 8:28:
“We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.”
So the next time you experience something that feels “so much like a coincidence,” maybe it is not a coincidence. Maybe it is God quietly smiling, working behind the scenes of your life.
