Everyone has dreamed while sleeping. Some dreams seem real, some feel strange, and some leave a strong impression on the heart even after waking. But have you ever wondered: Can dreams be a message from God? Or are they only the result of the brain working randomly while we sleep?
This question is not new. Since Bible times, dreams have often been one way God conveyed His message. But how can we tell the difference between an ordinary dream and one that may have come from Him?
The Scientific Side: What Is a Dream?
Scientifically, a dream is mental activity that occurs while we sleep, especially during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase. During this phase, the brain is very active, almost like when we are awake. Dreams are formed from:
- Experiences and emotions that have not been resolved
- Memories stored in the subconscious
- The brainโs response to physical stimulation such as sound or touch
Neuroscience describes dreams as the brainโs mechanism for processing information and organizing memory. Yet even with a scientific explanation, not every dream can be understood logically.
The Biblical Side: God Has Indeed Spoken Through Dreams
In the Bible, God did not rarely use dreams to convey His plans and warnings. Some examples include:
- Joseph, Maryโs betrothed, was given guidance in a dream not to leave Mary (Matthew 1:20)
- Joseph, the son of Jacob, received dreams about his future (Genesis 37:5-10)
- King Nebuchadnezzar received a prophetic dream interpreted by Daniel (Daniel 2)
Even in Job 33:14-16 it is written:
โFor God does speakโnow one way, now anotherโthough no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people… then He opens their ears.โ
This means, God can indeed use dreams to touch, guide, or warn people.
How Do We Tell Whether a Dream Is from God or Just Ordinary?
Not every dream comes from God. Sometimes a dream is only a reflection of stress, everyday thoughts, or even spicy food before bed. However, there are some signs that a dream may have come from God:
- It brings peace, not excessive fear
- It contains a message that aligns with Godโs Word
- It stirs the heart to repent, change, or pray about something
- It is repeated or very clear, leaving a strong impression after waking
What matters is not making dreams the main standard for making decisions. Dreams may be one way God speaks, but they must still be tested through the Word, prayer, and wisdom.
Conclusion: Dreams Can Be a Channel, But the Word Remains the Main Compass
God is a creative Person. He can use anything to convey His voice, including dreams. But that does not mean every dream should be treated as revelation.
What matters most is not how often we dream, but how close we are to God, so that when He speaks through dreams, the Word, or our conscience, we are sensitive enough to hear Him.
As written in Jeremiah 33:3:
โCall to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things.โ
