This question arises because our lives are full of choices, from small matters to major decisions that can affect the future. On one hand, we believe in the free will God has given us. Yet on the other hand, we also believe that God is sovereign over all things. What is the balance between these two?
1. God Gives Us Free Will
From the beginning of creation, human beings were given the ability to choose. Adam and Eve could choose to obey or disobey God’s command (Genesis 2:16-17). Free will is a gift that shows God’s love is not forced. We are not robots simply carrying out a program, but persons who can determine the direction of our lives.
2. Our Decisions Have Consequences
The Bible says, “A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7). This means the decisions we make have real consequences. If we choose the wrong path, we must also bear the consequences. However, that does not mean God abandons us. Even in our mistakes, God can use situations to teach and shape us.
3. God Can Redirect Our Path
Even though we have free will, God can still intervene in our lives. For example, Jonah decided to run from God’s calling. But God arranged the storm, the ship, and the great fish to bring Jonah back to the right path (Jonah 1:3-17). Jonah’s decision was not simply canceled, but God changed the direction of his journey so it would align with His plan.
4. Prayer Can Change Situations
There are moments in the Bible when the prayers of God’s people led God to change His action. For example, when King Hezekiah prayed, God added 15 more years to his life (Isaiah 38:5). This shows that our relationship with God is real and dynamic. Our decision to pray can open the way for God’s intervention.
5. God Never Loses Control
Even when we make the wrong choice, God remains sovereign. Romans 8:28 says that God works in all things for the good of those who love Him. That means even bad decisions can still be used by God for a greater purpose. This does not mean the mistake becomes right, but God is able to redeem even from the wrong path.
