In the Christian life, giving is often seen as one expression of love for God and others. Yet a question often arises: should every act of giving be done without thinking twice? Should giving always be spontaneous, or may we consider it first?
1. Giving with the Heart, Not Under Compulsion
The Bible affirms, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). This verse clearly shows that the Lord cares more about the attitude of the heart than the amount or speed of our giving. So giving is not about rushing or acting without thought, but about willingness and sincere love.
2. Wisdom in Giving
Jesus Himself taught the importance of using wisdom. He said, “Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16). This principle also applies to giving. There are times when we must be sensitive to others’ needs and help without delay. Yet there are also situations when we need to consider how to give in a way that truly helps, rather than harms or creates unhealthy dependence.
3. An Example of Planned Giving
In the early church, believers collected offerings for fellow believers in need (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). Paul emphasized that each person should set aside according to the blessing received. This means giving can also be planned and done responsibly. So it is not merely spontaneous; it also involves stewardship and the awareness that giving is part of managing God’s blessings.
4. The Danger of Giving Without Consideration
Sometimes, giving without thinking twice can be taken advantage of by irresponsible people. For example, when we give money without knowing how it will be used, it may be used for harmful purposes rather than to help. That is why wisdom and prayer are very important in giving.
5. Giving with Wise Love
Jesus praised the poor widow who gave two small coins (Mark 12:41-44), not because of the amount, but because she gave out of her poverty with a pure heart. Yet on the other hand, Jesus also taught us to help in ways that bring life. So giving is not about haste, but about combining sincerity with wisdom.
