For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for all who have not seen me in person,

that their hearts may be encouraged and that they may be united in love, so that they may have all the riches of full assurance of understanding, and know the mystery of God, namely Christ,

in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

I say this so that no one may deceive you with fine-sounding words.

For though I am absent from you in body, yet in spirit I am with you, and I rejoice to see your orderly conduct and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

You have received Christ Jesus, our Lord. Therefore continue to live in him.

Be rooted in him and built up on him; be strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and let your heart overflow with thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive through empty and false philosophy, according to human tradition and the spiritual powers of the world, and not according to Christ.

For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

and you have been made full in him. He is the head over every ruler and authority.

In him you were also circumcised, not with a circumcision performed by human hands, but with the circumcision of Christ, which consists in putting off the sinful body,

having been buried with him in baptism, and in him you were also raised through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

And you, though once dead because of your trespasses and because of your uncircumcised state in the flesh, God made alive together with him, after he had forgiven us all our trespasses,

by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. And he removed it by nailing it to the cross:

He disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them.

Therefore let no one judge you in matters of food and drink, or with regard to a festival, a new moon, or a Sabbath day;

these are only a shadow of what was to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

Let no one rob you of your prize by pretending humility and worship of angels, dwelling on visions, and without cause puffed up by his worldly mind,
19
while he does not hold fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, being supplied and knit together by the joints and ligaments, receives its divine growth.

If you died with Christ and are free from the spirits of the world, why do you submit yourselves to various rules, as though you were still living in the world:

Do not handle this, do not taste that, do not touch this;

all these are concerned only with things that perish with use, and are according to the commandments and teachings of men.

These rules, though they seem full of wisdom in self-made religion, such as humility and harsh treatment of the body, are of no value except to satisfy the flesh.
