In the second year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; and his spirit was troubled, and he could not sleep.

Then the king commanded that the magicians, the enchanters, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams; so they came and stood before the king.
3
And the king said to them, “I have had a dream, and my spirit is troubled, because I want to know the dream.”
4
Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic, “O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will declare its meaning.”
5
But the king answered the Chaldeans, “I have made a firm decree: if you do not make known to me the dream with its meaning, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made into heaps of rubble;
6
but if you can make known the dream with its meaning, you shall receive from me gifts, presents, and great honor. Therefore make known to me the dream with its meaning!”

They answered again, “Let my lord the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare its meaning.”
8
The king replied, “I know for certain that you are trying to gain time, because you see that I have made a firm decree,
9
that if you cannot make the dream known to me, you shall receive the same punishment; and I know that you have agreed together to speak lying and corrupt words to me until the situation changes. Therefore tell me the dream, so that I may know that you can also declare its meaning to me.”

The Chaldeans answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can make known what the king asks! And no king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician, enchanter, or Chaldean.
11
What the king asks is too difficult, and no one can make it known to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not among mortals.”
12
Because of this the king became very angry and furious, and he ordered that all the wise men of Babylon be destroyed.
13
So when the decree went out that the wise men were to be killed, Daniel and his companions were also in danger of being killed.
14
Then Daniel spoke with prudence and wisdom to Arioch, the captain of the king’s guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon,
15
he said to Arioch, the king’s officer: “Why is this severe decree issued by the king?” Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel.
16
So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him time, that he might tell the king the meaning.
17
Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions,
18
so that they might seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions would not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19
Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
20
Daniel said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might belong to him!
21
He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;
22
he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with him.
23
O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise you, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you: you have made known to us the king’s matter.”
24
Therefore Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and said to him, “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon! Bring me in before the king, and I will tell the king the meaning!”
25
Then Arioch quickly brought Daniel before the king and said to the king thus: “I have found among the exiles from Judah a man who can make known the meaning to the king.”
26
The king answered Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar: “Are you able to make known to me the dream that I have seen, and its meaning as well?”
27
Daniel answered the king and said: “The mystery about which my lord the king has asked cannot be made known to the king by wise men, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers.
28
But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to my lord the king what will happen in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head on your bed are these:

As for you, O king, while you were on your bed, thoughts arose in your mind about what would happen afterward, and he who reveals mysteries has made known to you what is to come.
30
As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have wisdom greater than all the living, but so that the meaning may be made known to my lord the king, and that you may know the thoughts of your heart.
31
O king, you saw a vision: a great statue! This statue was tall, exceedingly bright, standing before you, and its appearance was terrifying.
32
As for the statue, its head was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze,
33
its legs of iron, and its feet partly of iron and partly of clay.
34
While you were watching, a stone was cut out without human hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and crushed them.
35
Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were all crushed together, and they became like chaff on a summer threshing floor; the wind carried them away, so that no trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

This was the dream, and now we will tell its meaning to my lord the king:
37
You, O king, king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, the strength, and the glory,
38
and into whose hand He has given the children of men, wherever they dwell, the beasts of the field and the birds of the air, and whom He has made ruler over them all — you are the head of gold.
39
But after you another kingdom will arise, one less great than your kingdom; then a third kingdom, of bronze, which will rule over all the earth.
40
After that there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, just as iron crushes and shatters everything; and like iron that breaks all things in pieces, this kingdom will crush and break them all in pieces.
41
And as you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it means that the kingdom will be divided; yet it will have the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron mixed with clay.
42
And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle.
43
As you saw the iron mixed with clay, it means that they will mingle by marriage, but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay.
44
But in the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, and its dominion shall not pass to another people any more: it will break in pieces all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it shall stand forever,
45
just as you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without human hands, and it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. The great God has made known to my lord the king what shall come to pass hereafter; the dream is true, and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
46
Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and worshiped Daniel; and he commanded that an offering and incense be presented to him.
47
The king answered Daniel, “Truly, your God is the God above all gods and the Lord over all kings, and the revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.”

Then the king honored Daniel: he gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief over all the wise men of Babylon.

At Daniel’s request, the king entrusted the administration of the province of Babylon to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, while Daniel himself remained at the king’s court.
