King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.

Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to gather the satraps, the prefects, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image that he had set up.

So the satraps, the prefects, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Then a herald cried out with a loud voice: “This is what is commanded to you, O peoples of every nation, tribe, and language:

when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, zither, pipe, and every kind of music, you must fall down and worship the image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up;

and whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately be thrown into the blazing furnace!”

Therefore, as soon as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, zither, pipe, and every kind of music, all the peoples, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

At that time certain Chaldeans came forward and accused the Jews.

They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, live forever!
10
You, O king, have issued a decree that every man who hears the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, zither, pipe, and every kind of music must fall down and worship the image of gold;
11
and that whoever does not fall down and worship shall be thrown into the blazing furnace.
12
There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men pay no heed to your decree, O king; they do not serve your gods, and they do not worship the image of gold that you have set up.”
13
Then Nebuchadnezzar, in rage and fury, commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought before him. So they brought these men before the king.
14
Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods and do not worship the image of gold that I have set up?
15
Now if you are ready, when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, zither, pipe, and every kind of music, fall down and worship the image that I have made. But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be thrown into the blazing furnace. And what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?”
16
Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar: “There is no need for us to answer you in this matter.
17
If our God whom we serve is able to deliver us, then he will deliver us from the blazing furnace, and from your hand, O king;
18
but if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods, and we will not worship the golden image that you have set up.”
19
Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury, and his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; and he ordered that the furnace be heated seven times more than usual.
20
He commanded some of the strongest men in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and cast them into the blazing furnace.
21
Then these men were bound, in their robes, trousers, hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the blazing furnace.
22
Because the king’s command was urgent, the furnace was heated exceedingly hot, so that the flame of the fire killed the men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
23
But these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell bound into the blazing furnace.
24
Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up quickly; he said to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” They answered the king, “Certainly, O king!”
25
He said, “But I see four men walking about freely in the midst of the fire; they are not harmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods!”
26
Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the blazing furnace; he said, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here!” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire.
27
And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together; they saw that the fire had no power over these men, that the hair of their heads was not singed, their robes were unchanged, and even the smell of fire was not on them.
28
Nebuchadnezzar said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and broke the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies, because they would not serve or worship any god except their own God.
29
Therefore I make a decree, that any person of any people, nation, or language who speaks contempt against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be cut in pieces, and his house shall be made a heap of ruins, because there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way.”
30
Then the king gave high positions to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

Daniel 3 contains a very well-known account: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship the golden image of Nebuchadnezzar and were thrown into the blazing furnace. Yet the Lord showed His power in an extraordinary way — saving them and being present with them in the fire. This is a story of steadfast faith and divine presence in the midst of trial.
📌 1. The Golden Image and the Command to Worship (verses 1–7)
“King Nebuchadnezzar made a golden image…”
- Sixty cubits high (about 27 meters), six cubits wide — a symbol of Babylon’s splendor and power
- All officials were invited to worship the image
- When the music sounded, everyone was required to bow down and worship
- Whoever refused would be thrown into the blazing furnace
🎯 The world will always pressure us to worship its system, even through threats.

“There were certain Jews… who would not worship that golden image.”
- Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down, even though they knew the risk
- The king was very angry, gave them a second chance — but they remained firm:
“If our God is able to deliver us, He will deliver us…
But even if not, we will not worship that image.” (verses 17–18)
🎯 True faith does not depend on the outcome, but on faithfulness to the Lord.
📌 3. Thrown into the Furnace (verses 19–23)
- The king grew even angrier and ordered the fire heated seven times hotter
- The strongest soldiers bound them and threw them into the fire
- The heat was so intense that the soldiers who threw them in died from the flames
🎯 Trials may seem destructive — yet they remain under God’s control.
📌 4. The Lord Present in the Midst of the Fire (verses 24–27)
“Did we not throw three men into the fire?”
- But the king saw four men walking freely in the fire, unharmed
- The fourth man was “like a son of the gods”
- The three young men came out of the fire:

“Do not fear those who can kill the body…”
→ They feared God more than human threats.
“In the world you will suffer persecution, but take heart, I have overcome the world.”
