1
If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder,

and the sign or wonder that he told you comes to pass, and he says, “Let us go after other gods,” whom you have not known, “and let us serve them,”
3
you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you truly love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4
You shall follow the LORD your God, fear him, keep his commandments, listen to his voice, serve him, and hold fast to him.
5
That prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has urged rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to turn you away from the way the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall put away the evil from among you.

If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or your own wife or your close friend entices you secretly, saying, “Let us serve other gods,” whom neither you nor your fathers have known,
7
some of the gods of the peoples around you, whether near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other,
8
you shall not yield to him or listen to him. Your eye shall not pity him; you shall not spare him or conceal his guilt,
9
but you shall surely put him to death. Your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people.
10
You shall stone him to death, because he sought to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
11
Then all Israel shall hear and fear, and they shall not again do any such evil among you.
12
If in one of the cities that the LORD your God is giving you to dwell in, you hear it said:
13
“Worthless men have gone out from among you and have led the inhabitants of their city astray, saying, ‘Let us serve other gods,’ whom you have not known,”
14
you shall inquire, search out, and investigate thoroughly. And if it is true and certain that such an abomination has been done among you,
15
then you shall strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroy that city and all that is in it, and its livestock, with the edge of the sword.
16
All its spoil you shall gather into the middle of its open square, and you shall burn the city and all its spoil with fire as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God. It shall remain a heap forever; it shall not be built again.
17
Nothing of the devoted things shall cling to your hand, so that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of His anger, show you mercy, have compassion on you, and multiply you, as He swore to your fathers.
18
For then you will listen to the voice of the LORD your God, keeping all His commandments that I am commanding you today, by doing what is right in the sight of the LORD your God.”

Deuteronomy 13 is a stern warning from God through Moses about the danger of turning away from the faith, not from outside, but from within the community itself — it could come from a false prophet, a close friend, even a family member. “Even if an angel from heaven should preach a different gospel, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8)
- In the New Testament, the death penalty is no longer applied, but exclusion from fellowship and church discipline are still carried out (1 Corinthians 5).
