“These are the statutes and the ordinances that you must carefully do in the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you to possess, all the days that you live on the earth.
2
You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations whose land you are taking possession of served their gods, on the high mountains, on the hills, and under every green tree.
3
You shall tear down their altars, break their pillars, burn their Asherim with fire, cut down the carved images of their gods, and wipe out their name from that place.
4
You shall not do so to the LORD your God.
5
But the place that the LORD your God will choose from all your tribes to set his name there as his dwelling, that you shall seek, and there you shall go.
6
There you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and your special gifts, your vow offerings and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.
7
There you shall eat before the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your households, in all that you undertake, because the LORD your God has blessed you.
8
You shall not do at all as we are doing here today, every man doing whatever seems right in his own eyes.
9
For as yet you have not come to the resting place and to the inheritance that the LORD your God is giving you.
10
But when you cross over the Jordan and live in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and when he gives you rest from all your enemies around you, so that you dwell in safety,
11
then to the place that the LORD your God will choose to make his name dwell there, you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and your special gifts, and all your choice vow offerings that you vow to the LORD.
12
You shall rejoice before the LORD your God—you, your sons and your daughters, your male servants and your female servants, and the Levite who is within your towns, because the Levite has no portion or inheritance with you.
13
Take care that you do not offer your burnt offerings at any place that you see;
14
but at the place that the LORD will choose in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I command you.”
15
But you may slaughter and eat meat whenever you desire, according to the blessing of the LORD your God that He has given you in all your towns. The unclean person and the clean person alike may eat it, as also the meat of the deer or the gazelle;
16
only you must not eat its blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.
17
Within your towns you may not eat the tithe of your grain, or of your wine, or of your oil, or the firstborn of your herd or flock, or anything from the vow offerings that you vow, or from your freewill offerings, or from your special offerings.
18
But before the LORD your God you shall eat them, in the place that the LORD your God will choose—you, your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, and the Levite who is within your towns; and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God in all the work of your hands.
19
Take care that you do not neglect the Levite as long as you live in your land.
20
When the LORD your God enlarges your territory, as He has promised you, and you say, ‘I want to eat meat,’ because you desire to eat meat, then you may eat meat whenever you desire.
21
If the place that the LORD your God chooses to put His name there is too far from you, then you may slaughter from your herd and flock that the LORD has given you, as I have commanded you, and you may eat it in your towns whenever you desire.
22
But you shall eat it as one eats the meat of a deer or a gazelle; both the unclean and the clean may eat it.
23
Only be sure that you do not eat its blood, for the blood is the life; and you shall not eat the life with the meat.
24
You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.
25
You shall not eat it, so that it may go well with you and with your children after you, when you do what is right in the sight of the LORD.
26
But your holy offerings that are with you and your vow offerings you shall take to the place that the LORD will choose;
27
you shall offer your burnt offerings, the meat and the blood of them, on the altar of the LORD your God, and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the LORD your God, but you may eat the meat.
28
Listen carefully to all that I command you, so that it may go well with you and with your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God.”
29
“When the LORD your God has cut off before you the nations whose land you are entering to possess, and when you have taken possession of their land and are living in it,
30
be careful that you are not ensnared into following them after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’
31
You must not do so to the LORD your God; for every abomination to the LORD, which he hates, they have done for their gods; even their sons and their daughters they have burned in the fire to their gods.
32
Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to it or take away from it.
🏔️🔥⛪ Summary of Deuteronomy 12 – Only at the Place the Lord Chooses
Deuteronomy 12 contains an important command about how and where the people of Israel must worship the Lord. The Lord commanded that all false places of worship of the pagan nations be destroyed, and that the people may offer sacrifices and worship only at the place chosen by the Lord, not as they please. This is a step of spiritual cleansing before living in the Promised Land.
📌 1. Destroy All Places of Idolatrous Worship (verses 1–3)
- Moses commanded:
Tear down the altars, sacred pillars, and images of the Canaanite nations.
Erase the names of foreign gods from that place.
🎯 Obedience to the Lord begins with cleansing life from every form of false worship.
📌 2. Worship Must Be at the Place the Lord Chooses (verses 4–14)
- The people must not worship the Lord in any place they choose.
- The Lord will appoint one special place (later known as Jerusalem) for:
Bringing offerings.
Holding sacred feasts.
Rejoicing with family and tribe.
🎯 The Lord has the right to determine the manner and place of worship — not according to human preference, but according to His command.
📌 3. Freedom to Eat Ordinary Meat (verses 15–16)
- The people may slaughter and eat meat in any place, as long as it is not part of worship (a sacrifice).
- Blood must not be eaten, because blood is the sign of life — it must be poured out on the ground.
🎯 There is a difference between ordinary food and food that is consecrated to the Lord.
📌 4. Sacrifices and Tithes Only at the Place the Lord Chooses (verses 17–19)
- Special offerings such as:
Tithes.
Freewill offerings.
Firstfruits.
- Must be brought to the place the Lord chooses, and must not be eaten in one’s own house.
🎯 Spiritual wealth and offerings must be directed to the Lord, not enjoyed for personal gain.
📌 5. Do Not Imitate Pagan Worship (verses 20–31)
- As Israel grows larger and spreads out, they may eat ordinary meat anywhere, but they must still not eat blood.
- They are strictly forbidden to imitate the worship practices of the nations, even if they seem “religious”.
- For those nations even burned their children for their gods.
🎯 Not every form of worship that appears holy is accepted by the Lord — what matters is truth and obedience.

- Worship of the Lord must be pure, according to His statutes — not human tradition or desire.
- The place of worship is important because the Lord chose it as the place of His meeting with His people.
- Freedom is not a reason to mix what is holy with what is ordinary.

- Obedience to the Lord includes destroying what is wrong and guarding the holiness of worship.
✨ The Meaning of Spirituality (New Covenant)
- In John 4:21–24, Jesus said to the Samaritan woman:
“The hour is coming… true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.”
This fulfills Deuteronomy 12: the Lord still chooses the way and the posture of the heart, not only a physical location.
- Blood is a symbol of life — in the New Covenant, only the blood of Jesus is the perfect sacrifice (Hebrews 9:22).
- The church becomes the place where the people gather and offer their lives as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1).
