“Now therefore, O Israel, hear the statutes and the ordinances that I teach you to do, so that you may live and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
2
You shall not add to the word that I command you, and you shall not take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you.
3
Your own eyes have seen what the LORD did concerning Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal-peor,
4
while you who held fast to the LORD your God are all alive today.
5
See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to possess.
6
Keep them faithfully, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
7
For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is whenever we call upon him?
8
And what great nation is there that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?
9
Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and to your children’s children,
10
that day when you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, Gather the people to me, and I will let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children likewise.
11
Then you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while the mountain burned with fire up to the heart of heaven, in darkness, cloud, and thick gloom.
12
And the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire; you heard the sound of words, but saw no form—there was only a voice.
13
And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Words; and he wrote them on two tablets of stone.
14
And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land to which you are going over to possess it.
15
Take careful heed—for you saw no form on the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire—
16
lest you act corruptly by making for yourselves an image in the likeness of any idol: the form of male or female;
17
the form of any animal that is on the earth, or the form of any winged bird that flies in the air,
18
or the form of anything that creeps on the ground, or the form of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth;
19
and lest you lift up your eyes to the heavens, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you are led astray to bow down and serve them, things which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under all the heavens as their portion,
20
but the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of His own inheritance, as it is this day.
21
But the LORD was angry with me because of you, and He swore that I would not cross the Jordan and would not enter the good land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
22
For I must die in this land; I shall not cross the Jordan, but you shall cross over and possess that good land.
23
Take heed, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which He made with you, and make for yourselves an image in the likeness of anything that the LORD your God has forbidden you to make.
24
For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
25
When you have children and children’s children, and have grown old in the land, and act corruptly by making an image in the likeness of anything, and do what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, so as to provoke Him to anger,
26
I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you will surely perish quickly from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess; you will not live long in it, but will surely be destroyed.
27
The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations to which the LORD will drive you.
28
There you will serve gods, the work of human hands, of wood and stone, which cannot see, cannot hear, cannot eat, and cannot smell.
29
But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him, if you search for Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
30
When you are in distress and all these things come upon you in the latter days, then you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.
31
For the LORD your God is a merciful God; He will not forsake you or destroy you, and He will not forget the covenant that He swore by oath to your fathers.
32
For ask now, from one end of heaven to the other, concerning former days, which were before you, since the time God created man on the earth: has anything so great ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard?
33
Has any people ever heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and lived?
34
Or has any god ever tried to go and take for himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs and wonders and wars, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and by great terrors, as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
35
You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him.
36
From heaven He let you hear His voice to instruct you; on the earth He let you see His great fire, and you heard His words from the midst of the fire.
37
Because He loved your fathers and chose their descendants after them, He Himself brought you out of Egypt by His great power,
38
to drive out before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in and give you their land as your inheritance, as it is today.
39
Therefore know this day and take it to heart, that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.
40
Keep His statutes and His commandments that I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you forever.”
41
Then Moses set apart three cities across the Jordan River, on the east side,
42
so that the one who kills another person unintentionally and without having hated him beforehand may flee there, and when he flees to one of these cities, he may live.
43
These cities were: Bezer in the wilderness, in the highland region, for the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.
44
This is the law of the Torah that Moses set before the people of Israel.
45
These are the warnings, statutes, and ordinances that Moses spoke to the people of Israel, when they came out from Egypt,

beyond the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, whom Moses and the people of Israel struck down when they came out from Egypt.

And they took possession of his land, and also the land of Og king of Bashan: both of them kings of the Amorites, who dwelt beyond the Jordan, toward the east,

from Aroer, by the bank of the river Arnon, as far as Mount Sirion — that is, Mount Hermon —

and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan, eastward, as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopes of Mount Pisgah.

Deuteronomy 4 is the closing part of Moses’ first speech. In this chapter, Moses emphasizes the importance of complete obedience to God’s law, warns against the danger of idolatry, and declares that the Lord is a God who is near and loving, yet also holy and not to be taken lightly.
📌 1. A Call to Hear and Obey (verses 1–8)
- Moses urged the people of Israel:
“Hear the statutes and ordinances… so that you may live.”
- They must not add to or take away from the word of the Lord.
- Moses reminded them of what happened at Baal-Peor (Numbers 25), when the people of Israel worshiped the god of Moab and were judged by the Lord.
- The people of Israel possessed a great and righteous law, unmatched by any other nation.
🎯 Obedience is not meant to restrict, but to preserve the life and holiness of God’s people.
📌 2. Remember and Teach It to the Next Generation (verses 9–14)
- Moses said:
“Do not forget the things you have seen with your own eyes.”
- Parents must teach their children the experiences and law of the Lord.
- Moses referred to the event at Mount Horeb, when the Lord gave the law, not in the form of an image, but as a voice, so that the people would not make an idol as a symbol of God.
🎯 The passing on of faith from generation to generation is a primary responsibility of believers.
📌 3. A Strict Prohibition Against Idolatry (verses 15–31)
- The Lord forbids His people to make any image (human, animal, heavenly bodies) as an object of worship.
- Moses warned: if they worship idols, they will be driven out of the promised land.
- However, if they repent and seek the Lord with all their heart, He will forgive.
🎯 The Lord is a God who judges justly, yet also forgives with love those who truly repent.
📌 4. The God Beyond Compare (verses 32–40)
- Moses affirmed that no other nation had ever experienced God as Israel had:
God spoke from the fire.
God delivered them from Egypt with miracles.
- All this was done because of His love for their ancestors and His will to give an inheritance to their descendants.

- Moses set apart three cities of refuge on the east side of the Jordan River, so that one who killed unintentionally could flee there.
