This question often arises both from believers and skeptics: “If miracles are real, doesn’t that contradict the laws of nature? How can something scientific and spiritual coexist?” To answer this, we need to understand what natural laws are, what miracles are, and how the Bible views both.
What Are Natural Laws?
Natural laws are descriptions of the patterns of order in God’s creation that we can observe. For example, the law of gravity explains how objects fall, or the laws of thermodynamics explain energy. Natural laws are not “rigid rules” that bind God, but rather the way we understand the order of His creation. As Psalm 19:2 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
What Are Miracles?
Miracles are acts of God that go beyond natural habits to reveal His power. When Jesus walked on water (Matthew 14:25), healed a blind man (Mark 10:46-52), or raised Lazarus (John 11:43-44), these were not merely “rare phenomena,” but divine interventions intended to reveal who He is.
