The term “blind faith” is often used to belittle religious people, as if believing means closing one’s eyes to common sense. But is Christian faith really blind, without foundation and evidence? The Bible presents a different picture: faith is not a leap into darkness, but rather a trusting response to God who has clearly revealed Himself.
Faith Is Not Without Foundation
Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” The word “conviction” here emphasizes that faith is not merely a feeling, but has a real basis. The Israelites believed in God because they saw how He parted the Red Sea (Exodus 14). The disciples believed because they saw Jesus rise from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:3-6).
Christian faith rests on God’s work in history, not on empty imagination.
God Reveals Himself Through Evidence
- Creation – Psalm 19:2: “The heavens declare the glory of God.” The beauty and order of the universe are clear evidence of the Creator’s existence.
- History and Prophecy – The life of Jesus was foretold hundreds of years earlier (Isaiah 53; Micah 5:1).
- The Resurrection of Christ – The empty tomb and the testimony of the disciples form the foundation of faith. That is why Paul said, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile” (1 Corinthians 15:14).
The Difference Between Faith and Credulity
Credulity is believing in something without consideration. Christian faith is different because:
- Using reason: Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God “with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37).
- Tested by real experience: many people experience life changes when they believe in Christ.
- Consistent with reality: Christian faith does not reject facts, but gives meaning behind the facts.
Faith Requires Trust
Although faith is not blind, there is still an element of trust that goes beyond empirical evidence. Just like trusting someone we love: we do not have complete data, but there is enough basis to entrust our heart. Likewise with faith in God, we believe not because we know everything, but because we have seen enough to rely on Him.
