This question is quite important, because throughout history there have always been groups or views that consider Jesus’ teaching still incomplete and needing to be added to with tradition, new revelation, or extra rules. But is that really true? Does Jesus’ teaching actually need to be perfected, or is His teaching already sufficient and final for the Christian faith?
1. Jesus Taught the Word of God with Full Authority
In Matthew 7:28-29, the crowds were amazed at Jesus’ teaching, because He taught not like the scribes, but as one who had authority. This shows that His teaching was not merely a human opinion, but came from God Himself.
Jesus did not quote many earlier teachers to prove His truth, but instead He said directly, “You have heard that it was said… but I say to you…” (Matthew 5:21-22). This proves that Jesus’ teaching stands with divine authority and does not need human improvement.
2. Jesus’ Teaching Fulfilled the Law
Many people think Jesus came to abolish the earlier laws, but in Matthew 5:17 Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
To fulfill means to bring to its intended goal, not to add something lacking. So Jesus’ teaching is the peak of God’s revelation, not a temporary stage waiting for a later completion.
3. The Perfection of Christ’s Gospel
The book of Hebrews affirms that Jesus is God’s fullest revelation. Hebrews 1:1-2 says that in the past God spoke through the prophets in many ways, but in these last days He has spoken through His Son.
This means the revelation through Jesus Christ is final. There is no longer any need to add to it or improve it, because in Him we have already received the complete truth. Jesus is not only a moral teacher, but the truth itself (John 14:6).
4. The Danger of Adding or Taking Away
The Bible gives a strong warning not to add to or take away from God’s Word. Revelation 22:18-19 says that whoever adds anything to this word will receive the plagues written in it. This shows that Jesus’ teaching and the whole Scripture are already sufficient and perfect.
When there are those who claim to have “new revelation” or additional teaching outside the Gospel of Christ, we need to be careful. Paul himself warned in Galatians 1:8 that even if an angel from heaven should preach a different gospel, he must be accursed.

Some people may think Jesus’ teaching was only relevant in ancient times, so it needs to be updated to fit the modern world. But the truth Jesus taught is an eternal principle, not merely a cultural rule.
Love for God and love for others (Matthew 22:37-39) is the greatest commandment and never becomes outdated. This principle crosses time, culture, and even civilization. That is why Jesus’ teaching remains relevant for life today, without needing to be “perfected.”

What is needed is not to perfect Jesus’ teaching, but to obey it and live it out in daily life. The word of Christ is already enough to guide our lives, bring us into the knowledge of God, and direct us to eternal salvation.
