Modern life often keeps us busy with our own concerns. We chase work goals, protect our comfort, and strive to reach our dreams. Yet in the middle of all that busyness, we often forget that there are people around us who are struggling just to survive. The Bible repeatedly reminds us not to turn a blind eye to the poor.
Proverbs 19:17 says, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” This verse shows how serious God’s heart is for the poor. Giving to them is not merely charity, but an act that God sees as a debt He will one day repay.
Jesus Himself cared deeply for those who were oppressed. In Matthew 25:35-36 He said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Jesus identified Himself with those in need. That means every time we help the poor, we are actually serving Christ.
However, helping the poor does not always mean giving large amounts of money. It could be something as simple as food, decent used clothing, or even just listening and treating them as valuable people. What God sees is a heart full of compassion. 1 John 3:17 says, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?”
Sadly, in this age it is very easy for us to ignore the poor. We may think, “That’s not my concern,” or “They should work harder.” Yet they may be trapped in difficult circumstances they did not choose. This is exactly where believers are called to be present as the light and salt of the world.
Loving the poor will not make us lose out. In fact, by sharing, we are planting seeds that will one day bring a harvest of blessing. Luke 6:38 makes it clear, “Give, and it will be given to you.” God’s promise is clear: those who are generous will never lack.
Today, let us be sensitive. Notice whether there are poor people around us whom we can help. Do not wait until you are rich before helping, because love can begin with the small things we do sincerely.
Lord, open my eyes to see the people in need around me. Soften my heart so I will not ignore them, but be willing to share with love. Teach me to help not for show, but as an expression of love for You. Amen.
