Again I saw all the oppression that is done under the sun, and behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power.

Therefore I considered the dead, who had long since died, more fortunate than the living, who are still alive.

But more fortunate than both of them I considered the one who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

And I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from one person’s envy of another. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Again I saw vanity under the sun:

there was a man all alone, with neither son nor brother, and there was no end to all his labor; his eyes were not satisfied with riches. — For whom am I laboring and depriving myself of pleasure? — This also is vanity and a grievous task.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.

For if they fall, one will lift up his companion; but woe to the one who falls and has no one else to lift him up!

Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one be warm alone?

And though one may be overpowered, two can withstand him. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Better is a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king, who no longer knows how to take warning.

For out of prison that youth came to become king, though he was born poor in his kingdom.

I saw all the living who walk under the sun following the youth, the one who was to stand in the king’s place.

There was no end to all the people over whom he ruled, yet those who came afterward were not pleased with him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
