Who is like the wise person? And who knows the explanation of every matter? A person’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

Keep the king’s command, because of your oath to God.

Do not be hasty to go out from his presence; do not persist in an evil matter, for he does whatever pleases him.

For the king’s word has authority; who may say to him, “What are you doing?”

Whoever keeps the command will not come to harm, and the heart of the wise knows the proper time and judgment,

for there is a proper time and judgment for every matter, though the trouble of man weighs heavily upon him.

Indeed, he does not know what will happen, for who can tell him how it will be?

No one has power to restrain the wind, and no one has power over the day of death. There is no release in war, and wickedness will not deliver those who practice it.

All this I have seen, and I gave my attention to every work done under the sun, when one person rules over another to his hurt.

I also saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the holy place, while those who had done right were forgotten in the city. This also is vanity.

Because sentence against an evil deed is not carried out quickly, the heart of the children of men is fully set to do evil.

Though a sinner and an evildoer may live a hundred times and yet live long, still I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before Him.

But it will not be well with the wicked, and like a shadow he will not lengthen his days, because he does not fear before God.

There is a vanity that takes place on the earth: there are righteous people who receive what the deeds of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who receive what the deeds of the righteous deserve. I said, “This also is vanity!”

So I praised enjoyment, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be joyful. This will stay with him in his labor through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.

When I applied my heart to understand wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, though one’s eyes do not sleep day or night,

then I saw that man cannot find out all the work of God that is done under the sun. However much man may labor to seek it out, he will not find it out. Even if the wise man claims to know it, he cannot find it out.

Ecclesiastes 8 speaks about wisdom in the face of power, God’s time, and life’s injustice. Solomon acknowledges that many things cannot be explained by human wisdom, especially when the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer. Yet he still urges people to live in the fear of God, even though life is full of paradoxes.
📌 1. The King’s Power and Wisdom (verses 1–5)

- A wise person knows when and how to act, even before a king
- Obeying the king’s command (authority) is wise — as long as the conscience remains upright

- There is a time for all things, including evil and punishment

- We do not know all of God’s plans, so give thanks and enjoy the simple life God gives
- Eating, drinking, and working are blessings — if lived in the fear of the Lord
