Indeed, all this I have considered, and all this I have examined: that the righteous and the wise, and their deeds, whether love or hatred, are in the hand of God; man does not know anything that lies before him.

All things come alike to all; the same fate comes to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the evil, to the clean and to the unclean, to the one who offers sacrifice and to the one who does not offer sacrifice. As the good man is, so is the sinner; as the one who swears, so is the one who is afraid to swear.

This is the evil in all that is done under the sun: the same fate comes to all. The hearts of the children of men are also full of evil, and madness is in their hearts throughout their lives; and afterward they go to the realm of the dead.

But whoever belongs among the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no more reward, and even the memory of them has perished.

Their love, their hatred, and their envy have long since vanished, and forever they have no more share in anything that is done under the sun.

Come, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a cheerful heart, for God has long been pleased with your works.

Let your garments always be white, and let not oil be lacking on your head.

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life, which the LORD has given you under the sun, for that is your portion in life and in the labor that you do with toil under the sun.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for there is no work, nor planning, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the realm of the dead, where you are going.

Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful; but time and chance happen to them all.

For man does not know his time. Like fish caught in a cruel net, and like birds caught in a snare, so the children of men are trapped in an evil time, when it falls upon them suddenly.

This also I saw as wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me:

there was a little city, and few people in it; and a great king came against it, besieged it, and built great siegeworks against it;

now there was found in it a poor wise man, and by his wisdom he delivered the city; yet no one remembered that poor man.

Then I said, “Wisdom is better than strength; yet the wisdom of the poor is despised, and his words are not heard.”

The words of the wise, spoken quietly, are better than the shout of one who rules among fools.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner can destroy much good.
