After these things, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus had subsided, he remembered Vashti, what she had done, and what had been decreed against her.

Then the king’s attendants who served him said, “Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king.
3
Let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather all the beautiful young virgins to the citadel of Susa, to the women’s quarters, under the care of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, keeper of the women; and let perfumes be given to them.
4
And let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” This pleased the king, and he did so.

Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew named Mordecai son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, a Benjamite,

who had been carried away from Jerusalem among the captives taken with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away into exile.

He was bringing up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman was beautiful in form and lovely in appearance. When her father and mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.

So when the king’s command and decree were proclaimed, and many young women were gathered in the citadel of Susa under the care of Hegai, Esther also was taken into the king’s palace, under the care of Hegai, keeper of the women.

The young woman pleased him and won his favor, so that he quickly provided her with perfumes and her portion, and also seven chosen maidservants from the king’s palace, and moved her and her maidservants to the best place in the women’s quarters.

Esther did not reveal her people or her kindred, for Mordecai had forbidden her to do so.

Every day Mordecai walked back and forth in front of the court of the women’s quarters to learn how Esther was and what would happen to her.

Each young woman’s turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus, after she had been treated according to the regulation for the women for twelve months, for so were the days of their preparation completed: six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes and other cosmetics for women.

Then the young woman would go in to the king, and whatever she desired was to be given her to take with her from the women’s quarters to the king’s palace.

In the evening she would go in, and in the morning she would return, but this time to the second women’s house, under the care of Saasgaz, the king’s eunuch, keeper of the concubines. She was not permitted to go in again to the king, unless the king was pleased with her and she was called by name.

When Esther — the daughter of Abihail, the uncle of Mordecai who had taken Esther as his daughter — came her turn to go in to the king, she asked for nothing except what Hegai, the king’s eunuch, keeper of the women, advised.
So Esther won favor in the sight of all who saw her.

Thus Esther was brought in to King Ahasuerus, into his royal palace, in the tenth month — that is, the month of Tebeth — in the seventh year of his reign.

And the king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she won his favor and kindness more than all the other virgins, so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Then the king held a great feast for all his officials and servants, the feast of Esther; and he proclaimed a remission of taxes for the provinces and gave gifts, as was fitting for a king.

While the virgins were being gathered a second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate.
20
Now Esther had not made known her kindred or her people, as Mordecai had commanded her, for Esther continued to do what Mordecai said, as when she was still under his care.

In those days, while Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate, Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs who were among the gatekeepers, became angry and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.

But the matter became known to Mordecai, and he told it to Queen Esther, and Esther reported it to the king in Mordecai’s name.

The matter was investigated and found to be so, and the two men were impaled on a stake. And the event was written in the book of the chronicles in the presence of the king.

Esther 2 continues the story of God’s hidden yet real plan. After Queen Vashti’s fall, King Ahasuerus sought a replacement, and Esther — an orphaned Jewish girl — was chosen to be queen over the Persian kingdom. ➡️ After 12 months of beauty treatments, each young woman had her turn to meet the king
➡️ Esther asked for nothing except what Hegai recommended, and everyone was pleased with her
➡️ When her turn came, the king loved her more than the others
➡️ The king made her queen, replacing Vashti, and held a feast in her honor
