Not all courage is shown with a loud shout on the battlefield. There is courage that is born in silence, accompanied by prayer and full surrender to God. The story of Esther is one of the most beautiful examples of this.
Esther was not a soldier or a prophet standing before the crowd. She was only a Jewish woman who became queen in the Persian kingdom. Yet when her people were threatened with destruction by Haman’s decree, Esther chose to take a step that could have cost her life.
Mordecai, her uncle, reminded her: “Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). This statement affirms that God places us in certain positions for a purpose. Sometimes, the courage God asks of us is not to fight the enemy with weapons, but to stand firm where He has placed us and act at the right time.
Before approaching the king, Esther asked all the Jews in Susa to fast together for three days (Esther 4:16). There was no loud protest, no massive demonstration, only prayer and unity of heart before God. Esther’s courage grew from the conviction that God holds the outcome in His hands.
True courage is born from an intimate relationship with God. Without a strong foundation of faith, courage can turn into reckless boldness. Esther teaches that spiritual preparation is often more important than human strategic preparation.
In our lives, we may not face a threat of death like Esther did. Yet we are often confronted with decisions that determine our future or the future of others. Facing pressure from an unfair boss, defending the truth when the majority chooses silence, or standing up for the weak—all of these require courage. And like Esther, we cannot rely on our own strength, but must depend fully on God’s power.
When Esther finally went before the king and invited him to a banquet, she did so wisely and with great caution. God worked through her courage, which was born of prayer, and Haman’s evil plan was thwarted. Silence filled with prayer can produce a great breakthrough.
Today, if you are in a difficult situation and must make an important decision, remember Esther. Take time to be still before God. Let Him give you courage, wisdom, and the right time to act. Courage led by God will always bear victory.
Father, teach me to be brave like Esther. When I am afraid, remind me that You are the One who has placed me in my position today. Fill my heart with wisdom, and let every courage I have be born from prayer and obedience to You. Amen.
