Many people want to see change in their lives: a more harmonious family, a more stable job, a more fruitful ministry, even a more peaceful heart. Yet often we expect that change to come from outside, from improving circumstances, from other people changing their attitude, or from open opportunities. In fact, true change begins within us, not from the outside.
Jesus once rebuked the Pharisees, who appeared righteous on the outside, but whose hearts were far from God. He said, “First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean” (Matthew 23:26). In other words, a transformed heart will affect every aspect of a person’s life. Outer change will only last for a moment if it is not rooted in inner transformation.
Change from within does not mean we try hard in our own strength. It is the Holy Spirit who works to shape us into the image of Christ. This process is often not instant. It is like a potter patiently shaping clay. Sometimes it is struck, sometimes kneaded, sometimes spun on the wheel. The process can be exhausting, but the result is a beautiful vessel. The Lord is more interested in shaping our character before giving us great success on the outside.
We can see an example in Paul. Before he was known as a powerful apostle, he first experienced radical conversion. From a persecutor of the church, he was transformed from within into a messenger of love. The same was true of David, who learned to faithfully shepherd sheep in the lonely fields before the Lord entrusted him with the throne. The change that takes place in our private time with God is what prepares us for greater impact.
However, change from within is not always comfortable. It means learning to forgive when the heart wants to hold on to resentment, learning humility when pride wants to be lifted up, learning patience when we want to see results quickly. But that is exactly where we are growing. Inner change is often seen through small, consistent choices.
Today, perhaps we are waiting for changes in the situations around us. But God’s Word gently reminds us: do not wait for others to change first. Let God change your heart first. From a transformed heart come words filled with love, wiser attitudes, and decisions that bring life. Change on the outside is only the fruit of change on the inside.
Lord, shape my heart first before You change what is around me. Teach me to be willing to be processed and formed according to Your will. Let every small change in my inner life produce a great impact for my life and for those around me. Amen.
