After this, some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have placed before them the stumbling block of their iniquity. Should I let them inquire of Me?
4
Therefore speak to them and say: Thus says the Lord GOD: Every man of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart and places before him the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet — I, the LORD, will answer him Myself because of the multitude of his idols,
5
so that I may take hold of the heart of the house of Israel, who have all turned away from Me through all their idols.
6
Therefore say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord GOD: Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations.
7
For every one, whether of the house of Israel or of the strangers who dwell among Israel, who turns away from Me and sets up his idols in his heart and places before him the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me for himself — I, the LORD, will answer him Myself.
8
I Myself will set My face against that man and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from among My people. Then you shall know that I am the LORD.
9
And if the prophet is enticed and speaks a word — I, the LORD, have enticed that prophet — then I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel.
10
They shall bear their own guilt: both the one who inquires and the prophet.
11
so that the house of Israel may no longer go astray from Me, nor defile themselves any more with all their transgressions; thus they shall be My people, and I will be their God, declares the Lord GOD.”

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

“Son of man, if a land sins against Me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out My hand against it by breaking its supply of bread and sending famine upon it, and cutting off from it man and beast,
14
even if these three men were in its midst, Noah, Daniel, and Job, they would save only their own lives by their righteousness, declares the Lord GOD.
15
Or if I cause wild beasts to roam through that land and they make it childless, so that it becomes desolate and no one dares pass through because of the beasts,
16
though these three men were in its midst, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, they would not save either sons or daughters; only they themselves would be saved, but the land would become desolate.
17
Or if I bring a sword against that land and say, ‘Sword, go through the land!’ and I cut off from it man and beast,
18
and though these three men were in its midst, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, they would not save either sons or daughters, but only they themselves would be saved.
19
Or if I send a pestilence upon that land and pour out my wrath upon it with bloodshed, cutting off from it man and beast,
20
and though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in its midst, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, they would not save either son or daughter, but they would save only their own lives by their righteousness.

Yes, thus says the Lord GOD: How much more when I send my four severe judgments upon Jerusalem—the sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence—to cut off from it man and beast!
22
Yet behold, some survivors will remain there, who will be brought out, sons and daughters; behold, they will come out to you, and you will see their conduct and be comforted concerning the disaster that I have brought upon Jerusalem, concerning all that I have brought upon it.
23
They will comfort you, when you see their conduct, and you will know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, declares the Lord GOD.”
