Then I heard Him cry out with a loud voice: “Come near, you who are to carry out judgment on this city, each with his weapon of destruction in his hand!”

And behold, six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with a weapon in his hand. Among them was one man clothed in linen, with a writing instrument at his side. They came in and stood beside the bronze altar.

At that time the glory of the God of Israel had risen from above the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the house, and He called the man clothed in linen, who had the writing instrument at his side.

The word of the LORD said to him: “Go through the midst of the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations done there.”

And to the others I heard Him say: “Follow him through the city and strike them down. Do not spare, and do not show pity.

Old men, young men, maidens, little children, and women—kill and destroy them! But do not touch anyone who has the mark. And begin at My sanctuary!” So they began with the elders who were before the house.

Then He said to them: “Defile the house and fill its courts with the slain. Go out!” So they went out and struck down the people in the city.

While they were striking the people down—I was left behind—I fell on my face and cried out, saying, “Alas, Lord GOD, will You destroy the whole remnant of Israel in pouring out Your wrath upon Jerusalem?”

Then He answered me: “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is very great; the land is full of bloodshed, and the city is full of injustice; for they say, ‘The LORD has forsaken the land, and the LORD does not see.’

Therefore I also will not spare, and I will show no pity; I will bring their conduct upon their own heads.”

And behold, the man clothed in linen, who had the writing instrument at his side, brought back word, saying, “I have done as You commanded me.”
🩸⚖️👼 Summary of Ezekiel 9 – The Destroying Angel and the Mark on the Forehead
Ezekiel 9 continues the dramatic vision in the temple. The Lord now commands judgment upon Jerusalem, beginning with the house of God itself. Destroying angels are sent, but one special angel is ordered to mark the foreheads of those who grieve over the city’s sin. Those who do not repent will be destroyed without mercy, including young and old, even the priests. This shows God’s absolute justice and severity in punishing sin, as well as His love for the righteous.
📌 1. Six Punishing Angels and One Marker (verses 1–2)
➡️ The Lord called six men with weapons of slaughter, and one man with a writer’s kit at his waist.
➡️ They came from the north side (the altar gate) — a symbolic direction of the source of judgment.
