When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before Me and be blameless.
2
I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will make you exceedingly numerous.”
3
Then Abram fell on his face, and God spoke to him:
4
“As for Me, this is My covenant with you: you shall become the father of a multitude of nations.
5
No longer shall your name be Abram, but Abraham, for I have appointed you to be the father of a multitude of nations.
6
I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.
7
I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.
8
And I will give to you and to your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”
9
God also said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.
10
This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised;
11
you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.
12
He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring.
13
Both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money shall surely be circumcised; so shall My covenant be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant.
14
But the uncircumcised male, who has not had the flesh of his foreskin circumcised, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
15
Then God said to Abraham, “As for your wife Sarai, you shall no longer call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.
16
I will bless her, and I will also give you a son by her; yes, I will bless her, and she shall become the mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”
17
Then Abraham bowed down and laughed, and said in his heart, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? And can Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
18
And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”
19
But God said, “No, but your wife Sarah shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
20
As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him, and make him fruitful and multiply him greatly; he shall father twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
21
But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year.”
22
When He had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from Abraham.
23
Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all who were born in his house, and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of his house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin that very day, as God had said to him.
24
Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised.
25
And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised.
26
That very day Abraham and Ishmael his son were circumcised.
27
And all the men of Abraham’s house, those born in his house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
🪧 Summary of Genesis 17
When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared and said:
“I am God Almighty; walk before Me and be blameless.”
The Lord renewed His covenant with Abram: He would make him the father of many nations, not just one. Therefore, his name was changed from Abram (exalted father) to Abraham (father of many nations).
The Lord also changed Sarai’s name to Sarah (meaning “princess”) and promised that Sarah would bear a son, though they were already very old.
As a sign of the covenant, the Lord appointed circumcision for every male as a symbol of the everlasting covenant. All males, including children and servants, were to be circumcised, including Ishmael, Abraham’s son by Hagar.
The Lord made clear that the covenant child would not be Ishmael, but Isaac, who would be born to Sarah the following year. Yet the Lord still blessed Ishmael with the promise that he would become a great nation.
Abraham immediately obeyed the Lord and circumcised all the males in his house, including himself and Ishmael.
