Then the LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day.

When he lifted up his eyes, he saw three men standing before him. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of his tent to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,

and said, “My lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.
4
Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under this tree;
5
and let me bring a piece of bread, so that you may refresh yourselves; after that you may go on your way, since you have come to your servant.” They said, “Do as you have said.”
6
So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, prepare three measures of the finest flour, knead it, and make cakes.”
7
Then Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.
8
Then he took curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set them before the men; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.
9
Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” He said, “There, in the tent.”
10
And He said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent behind Him.

Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years; Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
12
So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, shall I have pleasure, and my lord is old?”
13
Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’
14
Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”
15
But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
16
Then the men set out from there and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to send them on their way.
17
And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
18
Will not Abraham surely become a great and mighty nation, and through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?
19
For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised him.”
20
Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is very grave.
21
I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to Me; if not, I will know.”
22
Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD.
23
Abraham came near and said, “Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
24
Suppose there are fifty righteous people in that city. Will You sweep away the place and not spare it for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it?
25
Far be it from You to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous would be treated the same as the wicked! Far be that from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?”
26
The LORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
27
Abraham answered, “Behold, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord, though I am but dust and ashes.
28
Suppose five are lacking from the fifty righteous; will You destroy the whole city because of those five?” He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”
29
Again Abraham spoke to Him, “Suppose forty are found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the sake of the forty.”
30
Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak once more. Suppose thirty are found there?” He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31
He said, “Behold, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”
32
Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. Suppose ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”

Then the LORD went away, after He had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his dwelling place.

The Lord appeared to Abraham in the form of three guests who came while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent near the terebinth tree in Mamre. Abraham welcomed them with extraordinary hospitality: washing their feet, serving fresh bread, choice meat, and milk.
One of them — representing the Lord — delivered the promise:
“Next year, at this time, Sarah will have a son.”
Sarah heard from inside the tent and laughed, because she was already very old. The Lord rebuked that laughter and said:
“Is anything impossible for the Lord?”
After that, the Lord revealed to Abraham that He would judge Sodom and Gomorrah because of their very grave wickedness. Abraham then interceded in prayer, asking that the city not be destroyed if there were 50 righteous people — then lowering the number to 10 righteous people. The Lord promised not to destroy the city if there were 10 righteous people.
