There are times in life when we feel completely blocked. The door we hoped would open is firmly shut. A job application is rejected, a prayer for healing has not yet been answered, a relationship we prayed for ends instead. The heart asks, “Lord, why are You closing this door?”
The Bible gives many examples. Paul once said that he repeatedly intended to go into Asia, but the Holy Spirit forbade him (Acts 16:6-7). From a human point of view, that looked like failure. But behind the closed door, God was leading Paul to Macedonia, bringing the Gospel to Europe for the first time. Sometimes a closed door does not mean God is rejecting us, but rather directing us to a path greater than our plans.
We often misread a closed door as a sign that God does not care. Yet the opposite is true: it is a form of His love. God closes the wrong door so we will not enter a path that could destroy us. Just as a father would not let his child enter a dangerous room, so our heavenly Father protects us by closing certain access points.
We can learn from Joseph’s story. He was sold by his brothers, thrown into prison, and faced “closed doors” again and again. Yet behind all of it, God was weaving a beautiful plan, making him ruler in Egypt and an instrument to save many people. What looks like failure in human eyes is often a path of preparation in God’s hands.
The problem is, waiting in front of a closed door is not easy. That is where faith is tested. Do we still believe that God is working, even when we do not understand? Are we willing to step in another direction when the door we hoped for remains shut? True faith does not only believe when the door is open, but also remains calm when God closes the door.
Perhaps today there is a door you hoped would open, but instead it is closed. Remember, God never closes a door by mistake. Behind it, there is always a better plan. Do not focus only on the closed door, but look to the Lord who holds every key.
Lord, I often feel disappointed when the door I hoped for does not open. But today I want to learn to trust that You always have a better plan. Teach me to see not only the closed door, but You working behind it all. Hold my hand, lead me in Your way. Amen.
