Many people think that to please God, we must always do great things, serve without ceasing, and show impressive spiritual achievements. We stay busy at church, active in ministry, and diligent in attending spiritual activities. All of that is good, but God does not judge us only by what we do on the outside, but by the heart within.
Jesus Himself reminded the Pharisees, who were very diligent in practicing the law yet whose hearts were far from God. “These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me” (Matthew 15:8). This means we can appear spiritual in the eyes of people, but God sees much deeper. He sees our motives, the honesty of our hearts, and the love that flows from within, not merely outward performance.
Imagine someone giving a very large offering at church, but doing it to be praised by others. Compared with a poor widow who gave two mites out of her love for God, Jesus praised that widow more highly (Mark 12:41-44). Why? Because for God, what matters is not how great our actions appear, but how sincerely we do them for Him.
When we get trapped in the mindset of “pleasing God through performance,” we can easily become tired, disappointed, or even jealous when others do not appreciate us. But if we understand that God values a heart full of love, obedience, and humility more, we will serve with joy even without human applause.
God saw David’s heart, not just his ability. “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). This proves that spiritual quality is not measured by the popularity of our ministry or the number of works we produce, but by our personal relationship with Him.
So instead of being busy polishing our spiritual appearance, let us focus on a heart that is willing to be shaped by God. A heart that loves, is willing to forgive, is ready to obey, and remains faithful even when no one is watching. That is what pleases the Father’s heart. For in the end, when we stand before Him, what will be counted is not “how much” we did, but “how” and “for whom” we did it. Lord, teach me to serve and live for You with a sincere heart, not to seek human praise or recognition. Shape my heart so that I always love and obey You in whatever I do. Amen.
