One of the greatest mysteries of Christmas is how the Most High God was willing to come down to the world in a very humble way. Jesus, the King of kings, was not born in a luxurious palace, but in a simple stable. The question is, why did God choose such a lowly way to come and save humanity?
First, God wanted to demonstrate His humility. In Philippians 2:6-7, it is written, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Jesus did not come with worldly power, but with self-lowering love, to show that true glory is not about strength or status, but about service.
Second, God came so low so that everyone could come close to Him. Imagine if Jesus was born as a powerful king, perhaps the humble would feel unworthy to approach Him. However, being born in a manger allows anyone, including simple shepherds, to see that salvation is open to all without exception (Luke 2:10-11).
Third, this simplicity reminds us that God’s love does not depend on outward appearances. God wants us to see the heart, not worldly grandeur. 1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” The birth of Jesus in a simple place is a message that God’s love is present everywhere, even in places considered unworthy by humans.
Fourth, God’s humility is an example for us. Jesus taught that whoever is greatest must be a servant to all (Mark 10:45). By coming as a weak baby, He showed that love and humility are more valuable than power. Salvation is not born from pride, but from sacrifice and sincere love.
What does this mean for us today?
- We are called to live humbly. Christmas reminds us that God Himself was willing to come down that low for us, so there is no reason to live arrogantly.
- We are invited to see glory in simple things. In the busyness of the world, God often works in ways we do not expect.
- We are asked to draw near to Him without fear. Jesus came not to be intimidated, but to be embraced and followed.
Let us reflect: Have I appreciated Jesus’ humility by living humbly before God and others? Christmas is a moment to learn that the greatest love often comes from what appears to be the simplest things.
