In the story of Jesus’ birth, the shepherds were the first group to receive the joyful news from the angel. They were simple people, not religious leaders or nobles, but God chose them to be the first witnesses of the Savior’s birth. This shows that the message of salvation is not only for those considered important, but for everyone who is willing to listen and believe.
Luke 2:10-11 records, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” After receiving this news, the shepherds did not remain silent. Luke 2:17 writes, “And when they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.” They immediately became bearers of the good news, without waiting for recognition or special preparation.
Being a bearer of good news like the shepherds means having a sensitive, humble heart and a willingness to obey. The shepherds did not doubt the angel’s message; they immediately went to Bethlehem to see baby Jesus. Likewise, we are called to respond to God’s call with obedience. We do not need to be famous preachers to share the Gospel, because the good news can be conveyed through attitude, words, and acts of love.
What can we learn from the shepherds?
- Responsive to God’s calling. When they heard the joyful news, the shepherds immediately went to find Jesus (Luke 2:15). We must also be ready to seek and draw near to Him.
- Courageous in sharing the truth. They did not keep the news to themselves, but told it to others.
- Rejoicing because of experiencing God. Their joy did not come from worldly things, but from a direct encounter with Christ.
Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” Everyone who is willing to bring the message of salvation is beautiful in God’s eyes, regardless of background or ability.
We can all be like the shepherds. In a world full of worries, the news of Jesus’ love is the hope many people need. With loving words, prayer, and tangible actions, we can be bringers of peace in our surroundings.
Let us ask ourselves: Have I shared the good news about Jesus, not only through words but through my life? Like the joyful shepherds, we are called to continue spreading the message of salvation to the world.
