Proverbs 12:22 says, “Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight.”
In a world that is increasingly full of compromise, honesty is often seen as a weakness. Some say, “If you are too honest, you will lose out.” Yet God’s Word firmly declares that honesty is something that pleases God’s heart.
Honesty is not merely about speaking the truth, but also about living without a mask. Not pretending to be godly in front of others while secretly falling into sin. Not saying, “I’m fine,” when the heart is full of bitterness. Honesty is integrity—the harmony between the heart, words, and actions.
Jesus Himself taught in Matthew 5:37, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’” In other words, believers should not need excuses, cover-ups, or schemes. The sincerity of our words becomes proof that the Holy Spirit is at work within us.
We may think honesty makes us lose in a world full of deceit. But in God’s truth, it is honesty that lifts a person up. Joseph is a remarkable example: he refused to compromise with Potiphar’s wife’s seduction, even though he ended up in prison. Yet because of his steadfastness and integrity, God promoted Joseph to be ruler in Egypt.
Honesty may not make us successful quickly, but it will help us live in peace. We do not need to fear being found out, we do not need to live with guilt, and we do not need to cover one lie with another.
Living honestly is not easy, but pleasing God is far more important than pleasing people. God is looking for people who can be trusted, because through them He can pour out His blessing.
Today, let us learn to speak the truth in both small and big matters. Start with simple things: be honest in your work, in your reports, in your relationships, and even honest with yourself before God. When we live honestly, we not only please God’s heart, but also become a light for a world darkened by lies.
Father, teach me to live in honesty, even when it is not always easy. Forgive me if I have ever compromised with lies. Shape me into a person You can trust, so that my life may please Your heart. Amen.
