When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;
he was exalted in Israel,
but he became guilty through Baal worship, and so he died.

And now they keep on sinning,
and make for themselves cast images from their silver,
and idols according to their skill;
all of them are the work of craftsmen.
They say, “Offer sacrifices to them!”
Let men kiss the calves!

Therefore they shall be like the morning mist,
or like the dew that vanishes early,
like chaff blown from the threshing floor by a storm,
or like smoke from a window.

But I am the LORD,
your God from the land of Egypt;
you know no god except Me,
and there is no savior besides Me.

I knew you in the wilderness,
in the land of drought.

When they had pasture, they were satisfied;
after they were satisfied, their hearts became proud;
therefore they forgot Me.

So I became like a lion to them,
like a leopard I watched by the road.

I will attack them like a bear robbed of her cubs,
I will tear open their breast.
There I will devour them like a lion;
the wild beasts of the field shall tear them.

I will destroy you, O Israel;
who can help you?

Where now is your king,
that he may save you,
and all your rulers, that they may give you justice,
you who said, “Give me
a king and rulers!”

I gave you a king in My anger
and took him away in My wrath.

The guilt of Ephraim is bound up;
his sin is stored up.

Pains of childbirth come upon him,
but he is an unwise child;
for when the time comes, he does not present himself at the opening of the womb.

Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol?
Shall I redeem them from death?
Where are your plagues, O death?
Where is your destruction, O Sheol?
My eyes are closed to compassion.

Though he flourishes among the reeds,
an east wind shall come,
the wind of the LORD, rising from the wilderness;
it shall dry up his springs
and dry his fountains;
it shall plunder the treasure,
every precious thing.

(14-1) Samaria shall bear her guilt,
because she has rebelled against her God.
They shall fall by the sword;
their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,
and their pregnant women shall be ripped open.
