Do not rejoice, O Israel!
Do not shout for joy like the nations!
For you have played the harlot, forsaking your God;
you have loved the wages of a prostitute on every threshing floor.

The threshing floor and the winepress will not feed them,
and the new wine will fail them.
3
They shall not remain in the land of the LORD,
but Ephraim shall return to Egypt,
and in Assyria they shall eat unclean food.
4
They shall not pour out drink offerings to the LORD,
and their sacrifices will not please Him.
Their bread will be like bread of mourning;
all who eat of it will become unclean,
for their bread is for themselves;
it shall not come into the house of the LORD.

What will you do on the day of the appointed feast,
and on the day of the feast of the LORD?

For even if they escape destruction,
Egypt shall gather them up; Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possess their precious silver things;
thorns shall grow in their tents.
7
The days of punishment have come,
the days of retribution have come;
Israel shall know it.
“The prophet is a fool,
the man of the spirit is mad!”
because of the greatness of your guilt
and the greatness of your hostility:

Ephraim, my people, is watching for a prophet;
a birdcatcher’s snare is on all his paths,
hostility is in the house of his God.

They have deeply corrupted themselves
as in the days of Gibeah;
He will remember their guilt
and will punish their sins.

Like grapes in the wilderness
I found Israel at first;
like the first ripe fruit on the fig tree
I saw your fathers.
But they went to Baal-peor
and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing,
so they became detestable
like the thing they loved.

Ephraim’s glory shall fly away like a bird:
no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!

Even if they bring up their children,
I will make them bereaved, so that no man remains.
Yes, woe to them also
when I depart from them!

Ephraim, as I have seen, has planted his children for prey;
Ephraim must bring his children out to the slayer.

Give them, O LORD—
what will You give?
Give them a miscarrying womb
and dry breasts.
15
All their wickedness is in Gilgal;
indeed, there I began to hate them.
Because of the evil of their deeds
I will drive them out of My house.
I will love them no more;
all their princes are rebels.
16
Ephraim has been struck down;
its root has dried up;
they shall bear no fruit.
Even if they bring forth children,
I will slay the cherished fruit of their womb.

My God will cast them away,
because they have not listened to Him;
so they shall wander among the nations.
🎭💔🚫 Summary of Hosea 9 – Joy Turned to Punishment and Exile
Hosea 9 warns Israel that the time for rejoicing is over. They have misused the Lord’s blessings, worshiped Baal, and lived in disobedience. So the Lord declares that they will be carried into exile in Egypt and Assyria, no longer able to offer sacrifices, no longer able to keep the feasts, and even their offspring will be lost. This is a chapter full of divine sorrow over a stubborn people.
📌 1. False Joy Rejected (verses 1–3)
“Do not rejoice, O Israel, like the other peoples!”
- Israel rejoiced in the harvest, but it was not because of the Lord
- They regarded the blessing as their own, not as grace
- The Lord declares that they will not remain in His land, and will eat “unclean bread” in exile
🎯 Joy without God is only a mirage before ruin.
📌 2. Worship No Longer Accepted (verses 4–6)
“Their drink offerings will not be pleasing to Him…”
- In exile, they cannot offer sacrifices to the Lord
- Their food will be unclean, and death will be their end
- Even the wealth they gather will be eaten by nettles
🎯 Without God, worship loses its meaning. The house of worship will become a spiritual grave.
📌 3. The Prophet Rebuked, God Withdraws (verses 7–9)
“The day of reckoning has come… people regard the prophet as a madman…”
- The day of judgment has arrived, but the people reject the message of the prophet Hosea
- The prophet is thought to be mad because he speaks unpopular truth
- The Lord reminds them that, as in Gibeah (Judges 19), Israel remains corrupt to this day
🎯 When truth is treated as madness, a nation is heading toward total ruin.
📌 4. God’s Rejected Love, Blessing Removed (verses 10–14)
“I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness…”
- At first, Israel was precious and pleasing to God
- But they set themselves apart for Baal-Peor, and became detestable
- The Lord will make them barren — both spiritually and physically
- Even if they bear children, their children will die
🎯 What was once sweet fruit has now become bitter, because the root of their trust is broken.
📌 5. Destruction Is Certain to Come (verses 15–17)
“All their wickedness is in Gilgal…”
- Gilgal, a place in Israel’s spiritual history, became a symbol of betrayal and spiritual violence
- God says: “I will no longer love them” – a very firm decision
- They will become wanderers among the nations, rejected and scattered

“Because you did not know the time when God visited you.”
→ Like Israel, Jerusalem also rejected its time of grace, and destruction came.
“It is impossible for those who were once enlightened… if they fall away, to be renewed again.”
→ A picture of Israel that had enjoyed blessing, yet still chose rebellion.
“Jerusalem… how often I longed to gather your children… but you were not willing.”
→ The Lord grieves as in Hosea 9 — His love was rejected by the chosen people.
“Consider the kindness and severity of God…”
→ God is loving, but also just and not to be trifled with.
🎯 Hosea 9 teaches that the time for repentance has a limit. If love is continually rejected, what remains is only wrath.
