Blow the trumpet!
Like an eagle, an attack upon the house of the LORD!
Because they have transgressed my covenant
and rebelled against my instruction.

To me they cry out:
“My God, we—Israel—know you!”

Israel has rejected what is good—
let the enemy pursue him!
4
They have set up kings, but not by my consent;
they have appointed princes, but without my knowledge.
From their gold and their silver they have made
idols for themselves,
so that they may be cut off.

I reject your calf, O Samaria;
my anger burns against them!
How long will they be unable to be made clean,

O people of Israel? It was made by a craftsman,
and it is not God!
Indeed, the calf of Samaria
shall become splinters!
7
For they sow the wind,
and they shall reap the whirlwind;
there is no standing grain for them;
the stalk yields no flour;
and if it should yield,
strangers would swallow it up.

Israel is swallowed up;
now they are among the nations
like a vessel in which no one delights.
9
For they have gone up to Assyria,
like a wild donkey wandering alone;
Ephraim has hired lovers.
10
Though they hire among the nations,
now I will gather them up,
and soon they shall cease
anointing kings and princes.
11
Indeed, Ephraim has multiplied altars;
altars have become for him a sin.
12
Though I write for him my many instructions,
they would be regarded by them as something strange.
13
They love sacrifices;
they offer flesh and eat it;
but the LORD does not accept them.
Now he will remember their guilt
and punish their sins;
they shall return to Egypt!
14
Israel has forgotten his Maker
and has built palaces;
Judah has multiplied fortified cities;
but I will send fire into their cities,
so that their strongholds are consumed.

Hosea 8 sounds the trumpet of judgment over Israel. They claim to know God, yet reject his law, set up a king without the LORD’s approval, and worship images made by their own hands. 📌 1. God Rejects False Worship (verses 1–3)

- Israel cries, “We know you!” but rejects his law
- They set up a king without asking the LORD
- The Lord said: “The king they have set up I do not know.”
- They have rebelled against the Covenant
🎯 Worship without obedience is spiritual deception. The Lord weighs the heart, not the sound of confession.
📌 2. Sowing Wind, Reaping Storm (verses 4–7)
“They sow the wind and reap the storm…”
- This prophetic saying declares the spiritual law of sowing and reaping
- Worship of gold and silver images made by their own hands will bring destruction
- The Lord does not accept the yield of the “bull of Samaria” (an idol)
- Even the grain produces no bread — their work is vain without God
🎯 All religious effort without a true foundation of faith will fail and be rejected.
📌 3. Heading Toward Exile in Assyria (verses 8–10)
“Israel is swallowed up; now they are among the nations like a vessel no one desires.”
- They tried to hire the strength of another nation (Assyria)
- But instead they will be carried into exile by that nation
- They surrendered the dignity of being a chosen people for worldly power
🎯 Seeking refuge apart from the Lord will cause us to be swallowed by what we rely on.
📌 4. Worship Without Heart and God’s Law (verses 11–14)
“Ephraim has multiplied altars to sin…”
- Many altars are not a sign of piety — but an instrument for sin
- The Lord has given His law, but they treated it as something foreign
- They brought sacrifices, but the Lord was not pleased
- Jerusalem was also warned: because they forgot their Maker, the Lord would send a fire that would consume the palaces
🎯 When God’s law becomes strange to His people, it is a sign of a dying spiritual life.

“Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name?… I never knew you.”
→ Like Israel, claiming to know the Lord, but not obeying His will.
“Whatever a person sows, that he will also reap.”
→ Hosea 8:7 is a clear picture of the spiritual law of sowing and reaping.
“The foundation must be Jesus Christ… your work will be tested by fire.”
→ Just as Israel built on an idolatrous foundation, our worship too will be tested for quality.
“If we deliberately keep on sinning… there is no longer any sacrifice for sins.”
→ Israel’s sacrifice was no longer accepted, because their hearts were not obedient.
