The new year often arrives with a spirit of change. Many people make resolutions: they want to be more successful, healthier, more disciplined, or happier. There is nothing wrong with making resolutions, but the question is: in the midst of all those personal goals, where does Christ stand in our life plans? Do we still make Him the center of everything, or is He merely an addition to our list of hopes?
As Christians, we are called to live with our focus on Christ, not only in the new year, but every day. Yet how can we avoid being distracted by the noise of the world and keep our eyes fixed on the Savior?
1. Begin the New Year with a Humble Heart, Not High Targets
Many people immediately set big targets: “I want to read the whole Bible this year,” or “I want to be more patient and stop getting angry.” Those goals are good, but the Lord is more interested in a surrendered heart than in ambitious personal achievements.
Micah 6:8 says, “…what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God?” The main focus is not on how much we accomplish, but whether our hearts are truly humble and faithful before Him.
2. Build the Habit of Looking to Christ, Not to Yourself
One reason we often lose our way is because we focus too much on ourselves: our weaknesses, failures, and even our successes. Yet Hebrews 12:2 encourages us to “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
Living the new year with our focus on Christ means realizing that life is not about us, but about Him. We learn to begin the day with prayer, open the day with His Word, and measure success not by the world’s standards, but by faithfulness to His calling.
3. Let Christ Be the Compass in Every Decision
The new year usually brings many decisions: career, family, ministry, finances. Unfortunately, many Christians only bring God’s name after they have already chosen their own path. We often say, “Lord, this is my decision, please bless it,” instead of, “Lord, what is Your will?”
Proverbs 3:5-6 gives sharp counsel: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…” Focusing on Christ means letting Him lead, even when His way does not seem to match our plans.
4. A Focus on Christ Shapes How We Respond to Failure
The new year will not always go smoothly. There will be disappointments, failures, and days filled with struggle. But the difference between those who focus on Christ and those who do not is seen in how they respond when storms come.
A person who makes Jesus the center of life will say like Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:10, “For when I am weak, then I am strong.” He knows that his true strength does not come from himself, but from the Lord who is with him.
5. Use This Year to Glorify Christ, Not to Exalt Yourself
What are we pursuing this year? Human praise, followers on social media, financial success? Or do we want this year to be a year in which Christ is known more through our lives?
Philippians 1:21 says, “For to me, to live is Christ…” That sentence should become the center of all our resolutions. If life is Christ, then every aspect of our lives—career, ministry, family, relationships—must reflect Him.
6. Have a Community That Is Also Focused on Christ
One way to stay focused is to walk with people who are also pursuing Jesus. Do not walk alone. In a healthy community, we correct one another, strengthen one another, and pray for one another. God never designed spiritual life to be lived individualistically.
Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us to encourage one another in love and not to neglect meeting together. The new year can be deeply blessed when lived together with the body of Christ.
Closing: Focusing on Christ Is a Focus That Will Never Disappoint
In a world that keeps changing and is full of uncertainty, only Christ remains the same. Focusing on Him not only leads us into a right life, but also gives peace in every season of life.
Do not begin this year only with new promises, but with a new direction—one that is fixed on Christ. May every day of this year find us saying, “Lord, not my will, but Yours be done.”
