The issue of transgender identity has become one of the hotly discussed topics of our time. Society is increasingly open about discussing it, the media often highlights it, and many churches are confused about how to respond. As believers, we need to understand what the Bible says, while still holding fast to the love of Christ in every action and word.
Identity According to God’s Design
The Bible teaches that human identity begins with God’s own design. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” This means that from the beginning, God created human beings with a clear gender identity: male or female.
A change in gender identity is not part of God’s original design. However, the Bible also teaches that sin has damaged every aspect of human life (Romans 3:23), including the way we see ourselves.
Understanding a Real Struggle
For some people, feeling out of alignment with their biological identity is a real struggle, not merely a trend. Some have experienced gender dysphoria since childhood, some have been wounded by past trauma, or influenced by their environment. As followers of Christ, we must not judge without understanding. James 1:19 advises us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
Love Without Compromise
The Christian attitude toward transgender people must not fall into two extremes: rejecting and hating or accepting without limits. Jesus set an example of how to love sinners without approving the sin itself. He loved the woman caught in adultery (John 8:11), but He also said, “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
This means we are called to show genuine love, to listen, pray, and walk alongside others, while remaining faithful to the truth of God’s Word.
The Truth That Sets Free
Only identity in Christ can bring true relief to every person, regardless of their struggle. 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
True change does not begin with outward appearance, but with a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit. The church is called to be a safe place where those struggling with gender identity can come to know the love of Jesus and experience restoration.
Being Salt and Light in the Midst of the World
In the midst of a culture that blurs gender boundaries, we need to live as light (Matthew 5:14), showing that God’s design is good and brings peace. We are also called to be salt that restrains moral decay, while still softening hearts through love and gentleness.

The Christian response to transgender people is to hold fast to the truth of God’s Word while living out the love of Christ. We reject views that oppose God’s design, but we also reject hatred and judgment. Our task is to be witnesses of Christ who bring love, understanding, and the hope of restoration to all people, including those who struggle with gender identity.
