Many people claim to believe in God, but not all truly know Him personally. A relationship with God is not just about going to church or mentioning His name in prayer, but a deep, intimate, and real life journey. The question is, how can we get to know God more closely?
1. Knowing God Through His Word
The first step to knowing God is reading the Bible. It is not just a history book or a collection of moral laws, but God’s love letter to His people. In it, we learn who God is, what is in His heart, and how He works among humans.
In John 1:1 it says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This means that knowing the Word is knowing God Himself. Don’t wait for a certain moment; just start by reading one chapter each day and meditate on its meaning.
2. Involving God in Every Aspect of Life
Knowing God is not enough just through theory. We need to involve Him in our daily lives. When we face decisions, struggles, even joys, invite God to be involved. Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
God wants to be a part of our lives completely, not only on Sundays or when we need help.
3. Honest and Consistent Prayer
Prayer is two-way communication. We speak, and God listens. But knowing God also means giving time to hear His voice. Prayer is not just a list of requests, but a quiet time to open our hearts, give thanks, and allow God to touch our lives.
Jeremiah 29:13 writes, “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”
4. Sensitivity to the Guidance of the Holy Spirit
God speaks in many ways: conscience, peace, the Word, even through others. We need to learn to be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit who leads us to truth. Romans 8:14 says, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”
The more we obey and respond to His whisper, the more we know God’s character and will.
5. Being with a Healthy Community
Sometimes we know God more deeply through experiences with others. A healthy spiritual community can help us grow, mutually correct, and strengthen one another. Just as iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17), we are sharpened in faith through fellowship.
Knowing God is not a one-time achievement, but a lifelong journey. Yet one thing is certain: God longs to be known. He does not hide Himself. He delights in revealing Himself to those who humbly seek Him. So, let us open our hearts, take simple steps today, and enjoy a living personal relationship with the Creator.
