Raising children is a great responsibility, not only for parents, but also for the church and the Christian community. But in the midst of a world that is increasingly secular and full of distractions, how can we raise children so they grow according to the Christian faith? Is it enough just to bring them to Sunday school? Or is there a deeper and more consistent approach that God expects from every parent?
This question is important, because children are not merely heirs of the family line, but also heirs of the faith. The future of the church and the nation is greatly influenced by how today’s generation is formed in Christ.
1. Christian Education Begins at Home, Not at Church
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” The word “train” here carries an active, consistent, and intentional meaning.
Many parents hand over the spiritual education of their children to the church or Christian school, even though the Bible clearly emphasizes that the home is the primary place of spiritual formation. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says that God’s Word must be taught “diligently to your children” when you sit, walk, lie down, and rise up. In other words, everyday life is the main classroom for faith.
2. Example Is Stronger Than Lectures
Children are more sensitive to what we do than to what we say. It is useless to tell them to be honest if they see us lying. It is pointless to force them to church if we ourselves are lazy to pray.
Being an example in love, discipline, humility, and truth is the key. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” This also applies to parents toward their children.
Children learn faith not from how many verses we quote, but from how we live.
3. Use God’s Word as the Foundation of Family Values
In an increasingly relativistic world, children need to know that there is absolute truth and that it is God’s Word. Build the habit of:
- Reading the Bible together
- Meditating on and discussing certain verses
- Connecting biblical values with everyday events
For example, when a child experiences conflict at school, teach the principle of love and forgiveness from Matthew 5:44. When they are envious, point them to Galatians 5:22-23 about the fruit of the Spirit.
God’s Word is not just material to memorize, but must become a way of life and the family’s moral standard.
4. Teach Prayer Not as a Ritual, but as a Relationship
Many children are taught prayer like memorizing a mantra before bed or before meals. But as parents who fear God, we need to shape the understanding that prayer is direct communication with the Father in Heaven.
Invite children to pray in every situation: when they are happy, afraid, confused, or even disappointed. Let them know that God is not only the great God, but also a personal friend and helper. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
5. Train Children to Be Servants, Not Just Consumers
Christian faith is not only about knowledge, but also about character and service. Involve children in social activities, church ministry, or helping others. Teach them to serve with love, without expecting anything in return, just as Jesus came “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45).
Children who learn to serve from an early age will grow with humble and loving hearts. They will see faith not merely as an idea, but as real action.
Conclusion: Faith Education Requires Perseverance, Love, and Example
Raising children in the Christian faith is not an instant task. It is a long journey that requires prayer, discipline, and never-ending love. Not every child will respond immediately as we hope, but God’s Word never returns empty (Isaiah 55:11).
Build a household filled with the Word, not just worldly advice. Because in the end, children who know the Lord will become a light for their generation.
