How to Respond to a Friend Losing Their Faith

Seeing a friend lose their faith can be a sad experience. We may feel confused, disappointed, or even wonder if we can do something. Faith is a personal journey, but God often uses us to help others return to Him. So, how should we respond to a friend who has lost their faith?

1. Do Not Judge, But Show Love

When someone loses faith, there are often wounds, questions, or bitter experiences they have gone through. Judging will only push them further away. Romans 14:13 reminds us, “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.”
Patient love and listening without judgment is the first bridge to approach them.

2. Support with Prayer

Prayer is the strongest weapon when our words can no longer reach their hearts. James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Ask the Holy Spirit to work to soften their hearts and open their eyes to the truth.

3. Provide a Consistent Life Example

Sometimes, the only Gospel they can see is the way we live. Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Our faithfulness to God, even in difficult times, can be a strong testimony to them.

4. Answer with Gentleness and Wisdom

If they have many questions about faith, do not rush to give judgmental or harsh answers. 1 Peter 3:15 advises, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

5. Gently Invite Them Back

Sometimes, a simple invitation to join a small group, listen to spiritual music, or read Bible verses together can be a small step that opens their hearts. However, do not force it. Faith is the work of the Holy Spirit, not pressure from humans.

Conclusion

Responding to a friend who has lost faith requires patience, love, and perseverance in prayer. We cannot restore their faith by our own strength, but we can be God’s instruments to show His love. Believe that God never stops working, even when someone feels far from Him.
