Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees,
and to those who issue oppressive decisions,

to turn aside the needy from justice
and to rob the poor among My people of their rights,
so that they may plunder widows’ property,
and may prey upon the fatherless!
3
What will you do in the day of punishment,
and in the time of ruin that comes from far away?
To whom will you flee for help,
and where will you leave your wealth?
4
Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners,
and to fall among the slain!
Even after all this, the anger of the LORD is not turned away,
and His hand is still stretched out.
5
Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger,
and the staff in whose hand is My wrath!
6
I will send him against a godless nation,
and against the people of My wrath I will command him,
to take spoil and seize plunder,
and to trample them down like mud in the streets.
7
But he does not intend this,
and his heart does not plan it so;
rather, it is in his heart to destroy,
and to cut off not a few nations.
8
For he says:
“Are not my commanders all kings?
9
Is not Calno like Carchemish,
or Hamath like Arpad,
or Samaria like Damascus?
10
As my hand has reached the kingdoms of the idols,
whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11
shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols
as I have done to Samaria and her idols?”
12
But when the Lord has finished all His work on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
He will punish the proud heart of the king of Assyria and the haughty look in his arrogant eyes.
13
For he has said:
“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I have removed the boundaries of peoples,
and have plundered their treasures;
like a mighty man I have brought down those who sat on thrones.
14
Like one reaching to a nest,
so my hand has reached to the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers abandoned eggs,
so I have gathered all the earth,
and there was none that moved a wing,
or opened the beak, or chirped.”
15
Shall the axe boast against the one who wields it,
or the saw magnify itself against the one who uses it?
As though a rod could wield the one who lifts it,
or as though a staff could lift the one who is not wood!
16
Therefore the Lord, the LORD of hosts,
will make his stout ones waste away,
and under his glory a burning will be kindled,
like the burning of fire.
17
And the Light of Israel will become a fire,
and his Holy One a flame;
and it will burn and consume
his thorns and his briers in one day.
18
The splendor of his forest and of his fruitful field
he will destroy, both soul and body,
and it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
19
The remnant of the trees of his forest
will be so few in number
that a child could write them down.
20
In that day the remnant of Israel
and those who have escaped of the house of Jacob
will no longer lean on the one who struck them,
but will lean on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21
A remnant will return,
the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.
22
For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea in number,
only a remnant of them will return.
Destruction is decreed,
overflowing with righteousness.
23
For the Lord, the LORD of hosts,
will make a full end,
as decreed, in the midst of all the earth.
24
Therefore thus says the Lord, the LORD of hosts:
“O my people who dwell in Zion, do not be afraid of Assyria,
when they strike you with the rod and lift up their staff against you,
as Egypt did long ago.
25
For in a very little while my indignation against you will be ended,
and my anger will be directed to their destruction.
26
The LORD of hosts will stir up a whip against them,
as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb;
and his staff will be over the sea,
and he will lift it as he did in Egypt long ago.
27
In that day his burden will depart from your shoulder,
and his yoke from your neck will be destroyed.”
(10-27b) Assyria has come out from Rimmon

and has come against Aiath;
it has passed through Migron,
and at Michmash it stores its baggage.

They have crossed over the pass, saying:
“Geba is our lodging place!”
Ramah trembles,
Gibeah of Saul flees.

Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim!
Give attention, O Laishah!
Answer her, O Anathoth!

Madmenah flees,
the inhabitants of Gebim seek refuge.
32
This very day he will halt at Nob;
he will shake his fist
at the mount of the daughter of Zion,
the hill of Jerusalem.
33
Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts,
will lop off the boughs with terrifying power;
the tall in stature will be cut down,
and the lofty will be brought low.
34
The thickets of the forest will be cut down with an axe,
and Lebanon with its majestic trees will fall.
⚖️🔥🌲 Summary of Isaiah 10 – Wrath over Injustice and the Pride of Assyria
Isaiah 10 is a twofold warning: first, to Judah for social injustice and the oppression of the weak; second, to Assyria, which God used as an instrument of judgment, but which then became proud and will be destroyed. God shows that although He uses great nations as His instruments, they cannot escape judgment if they exalt themselves. At the end of the chapter, we again see hope: the remnant of the people will be saved.
📌 1. Woe to the Oppressor (verses 1–4)
“Woe to those who make evil decrees…”
- The Lord rebukes leaders who:
issue unjust laws
take away the rights of the poor
oppress widows and orphans
- Judgment will come: there will be no place to flee, and their wealth cannot save them
🎯 Social justice is part of worshiping God. Structural sin brings His wrath.
📌 2. Assyria: God’s Instrument That Became Proud (verses 5–11)
“Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger…”
- God used Assyria to strike the nations (including Israel and Judah)
- But Assyria thought it was great by its own power, not because of God’s will
- It compared Jerusalem to the pagan cities it had already conquered
🎯 Pride is a betrayal of God’s sovereignty — even for a great nation used by God.
📌 3. Judgment on Assyria (verses 12–19)
“Does the axe boast against the one who chops with it?”
- The Lord will punish Assyria for exalting itself against God
🎯 God controls history, and He does not hesitate to destroy the instrument that has become proud.

“The remnant of Israel will return to God Almighty.”
- The people who are saved will no longer rely on man (like Assyria), but will lean on the Lord
- Only a remnant will be saved — but it is a people who are trusting and faithful
🎯 Judgment does not erase God’s love — He still preserves the repentant remnant.

“Do not fear, O my people who dwell in Zion…”
- The Lord gives assurance: Assyria will not destroy Jerusalem as it did other nations
