(8-23) But there will not always be gloom for the land that was in distress.
If in former times the LORD brought low the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
then in later days He will glorify the way of the sea,
the region beyond the Jordan, the territory of the nations.

(9-1) The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in the land of deep darkness,
on them light has shone.

(9-2) You have multiplied the nation,
and increased its joy;
they rejoice before You,
as with joy at the harvest,
as men rejoice when dividing the spoil.

(9-3) For the yoke of his burden
and the staff on his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor,
You have broken, as in the day of Midian’s defeat.

(9-4) For every boot of the marching warrior
and every garment rolled in blood
shall be fuel for the fire.

(9-5) For a child has been born to us,
a son has been given to us;
and the government will be upon his shoulder,
and his name will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

(9-6) Of the increase of his rule
and of peace there will be no end
on the throne of David and in his kingdom,
to establish it and uphold it
with justice and righteousness
from now and forever.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
8
(9-7) The Lord has sent a word against Jacob,
and it has fallen upon Israel.
9
(9-8) Let all the people know it,
that is, Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
who speak in pride and arrogance:

(9-9) “Bricks have fallen down,
we will build with dressed stone;
sycamore trees have been cut down,
we will replace them with cedars.”

(9-10) Therefore the LORD raised up the adversaries of Rezin against them,
and stirred up their enemies:

(9-11) The Arameans from the east, and the Philistines from the west,
they devour Israel with an open mouth.
For all this, His anger has not turned away,
and His hand is still stretched out.
13
(9-12) Yet the people did not return to Him who struck them,
and they did not seek the LORD of hosts.
14
(9-13) So the LORD cut off from Israel head and tail,
palm branch and reed in one day.
15
(9-14) The elder and the honored man, that is the head,
and the prophet who teaches lies, that is the tail.
16
(9-15) For those who guide this people are misleading them,
and those who are guided by them are thrown into confusion.
17
(9-16) Therefore the Lord takes no joy in their young men,
and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows,
for they are all turned away and do evil,
and every mouth speaks folly.
For all this, His anger has not turned away,
and His hand is still stretched out.
18
(9-17) For wickedness burns like a fire
that consumes briers and grass,
and sets ablaze the thickets of the forest,
so that they rise up in columns of smoke.
19
(9-18) By the wrath of the LORD of hosts,
the land is burned,
and the people become fuel for the fire;
no one spares his brother.
20
(9-19) They turn to the right, but still go hungry;
they eat on the left, but are not satisfied;
each one devours the flesh of his own arm:
21
(9-20) Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh,
and together they are against Judah.
For all this, his anger is not turned away,
and his hand is still stretched out.

Isaiah 9 is one of the best-known chapters in the Old Testament because it contains a great prophecy about the birth of the Messiah. - The names given point to the divinity and eternal nature of the Messiah

“All the nations know this… but they did not return to the LORD…”
- Though God had warned them clearly, Israel remained stubborn and proud
- As a result, judgment would come in waves:

the LORD’s anger does not turn back: “His hand is still stretched out”
