Bel has already been brought low, Nebo has been laid down;
their images are carried on beasts, on animals;
those you once bore in procession, now are loaded
as a burden on weary beasts,

that cannot save the burden they carry.
Those gods are laid down together and brought low,
and they themselves must go away into captivity.

“Listen to Me, O house of Jacob,
all you who remain of the house of Israel,
you whom I have upheld from the womb,
you whom I have carried from the belly.

Even to your old age I am He,
and even to gray hairs I will carry you.
I have made you, and I will bear you;
I will carry you and will save you.

To whom will you liken Me, and compare Me,
and match Me, that we may be alike?

They pour gold from the bag
and weigh out silver on the scales;
they hire a goldsmith to make a god from it,
then they bow down and worship it!

They lift it onto the shoulder and carry it,
then set it in its place; there it stands
and cannot move from its place.
Though one cries to it, it does not answer
and it cannot save them from their distress.

Remember this and be ashamed;
consider it in your heart, you rebellious people!

Remember the former things of old,
that I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like Me,

declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet done,
saying, ‘My purpose will stand,
and I will accomplish all My desire,’

calling a bird of prey from the east,
and the man who carries out My counsel from a far country.
I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass;
I have planned it, and I will do it.

Listen to Me, you stubborn people,
you who are far from righteousness:

My salvation is not far off, for I have brought it near,
and My deliverance will not delay;
I will give deliverance in Zion
and My glory to Israel.”

Isaiah 46 is a contrasting call between the living God and dead idols. In the midst of Babylonian culture that worshiped man-made gods, God declares that He alone has upheld His people from the womb to old age. While idols must be carried and are powerless, God carries, sustains, and saves. This is a declaration of God’s supremacy over all man-made gods.
📌 1. Babylon’s Idols Are Powerless (verses 1–2)
“Bel has fallen, Nebo is brought low…”
- The gods of Babylon (Bel and Nebo) are brought down and cannot save their people
- Even that idol itself becomes a burden that people must carry
🎯 Whatever we worship besides the Lord — in the end will weigh us down, not set us free.
📌 2. The Lord Sustains from Birth to Old Age (verses 3–4)
“Even to your old age I am He… even to your gray hairs I will carry you…”
- The Lord is not only Creator, but also the sustainer of life for a lifetime
- He carries, bears, and saves — personally and with love

“To whom will you compare Me?”
- People make gods of gold and silver, yet those idols are silent and powerless
- The Lord invites His people to think honestly — is there any other god that truly works?
🎯 The Lord cannot be compared with anything made by human hands — His power is real, His love is active.
📌 4. The Lord Brings His Plan to Completion (verses 8–13)
“I have spoken, and I will also bring it to pass…”
- The Lord declares that He fulfills all His plans in due time
- He will call an “eagle” from the East (a symbol of Cyrus, the leader who would free Israel)
