Come down and sit in the dust,
O virgin daughter of Babylon!
Sit on the ground without a throne,
O daughter of the Chaldeans!
For you shall no longer be called
soft and delicate.

Take the millstones and grind meal;
unveil your veil,
lift up your skirt, uncover the thigh,
cross over the rivers!

Let your nakedness be uncovered,
and let your shame be seen!
I will take vengeance,
and I will spare no one,

says our Redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name,
the Holy One of Israel.

Sit in silence and go into darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans!
For you shall no longer be called
the queen of kingdoms.

I was angry with my people,
I profaned my inheritance,
and gave them into your hand;
you showed them no mercy,
even on the aged you made your yoke
very heavy.

You said, “I shall be queen forever,”
but you did not lay these things to heart,
nor did you remember the end of them.

Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures,
who sit securely,
who say in your heart:
“There is no one besides me!
I shall not sit as a widow,
and I shall not know the loss of children!”

These two things shall come upon you
in a moment, in one day:
loss of children and widowhood
shall come upon you in full measure,
though your many sorceries
and your very strong spells.

You felt secure in your wickedness;
you said, “No one sees me.”
Your wisdom and your knowledge
led you astray,
and you said in your heart:
“There is no one besides me!”

But disaster shall come upon you;
you will not know how to charm it away;
calamity shall fall upon you;
you will not be able to ward it off with sacrifice;
destruction shall come upon you suddenly,
of which you know nothing.

Stand fast with your spells
and with your many sorceries,
with which you have labored from your youth;
perhaps you may be able to profit,
perhaps you may inspire terror.
13
You are wearied with your many counsels;
let them stand forth and save you,
those who divide the heavens,
who gaze at the stars,
who at each new moon
make known what shall come upon you!
14
Behold, they are like stubble;
the fire consumes them;
they cannot deliver themselves
from the power of the flame;
there is no coal for warming oneself,
no fire to sit before!
15
Such to you are those with whom you have labored,
those who have traded with you from your youth;
each wanders on his own way;
there is no one to save you.

Isaiah 47 is a prophecy of judgment against Babylon, a great kingdom that was proud, cruel, and felt unconquerable. Through the prophet Isaiah, God foretells that Babylon will fall suddenly and in shame. They will not be able to be saved by their gods, sorcery, or astrology. This is a stern warning that human pride and arrogance will not endure before God.

“Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon…”
- Babylon, once majestic, is called “virgin daughter” but is now told to sit on the ground, without a throne
- The Lord will expose her shame because of her sin and oppression against His people
- It is affirmed that the Lord of Israel is the Redeemer and the Holy One
🎯 Worldly glory that is not joined with righteousness will be stripped away by the Lord.

“I was angry with My people… but you showed no mercy to the elderly.”
- Babylon was used by the Lord as an instrument of judgment, but it acted beyond measure, cruelly, and without mercy
- They felt secure and said: “I am, and there is no one besides me.”

“But these things shall come upon you suddenly… in one day.”

- Babylon trusted in astrology, sorcery, and diviners, but all of it is useless before the Lord
- They will become like burned straw — no one can save Babylon from the wrath of God
