Shout for joy, O barren one, who has never borne a child!
Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have never been in labor!
For the one who was left by her husband will have more children
than the one who has a husband, says the LORD.

Enlarge the place of your tent,
and let the curtains of your dwelling be stretched out;
do not hold back;
lengthen your cords
and strengthen your stakes!

For you will spread out to the right and to the left,
and your offspring will possess the nations,
and will inhabit the desolate cities.

Do not fear, for you will not be put to shame;
and do not be ashamed, for you will not be disgraced.
For you will forget the shame of your youth,
and will remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.

For your Maker is your husband;
the LORD of hosts is his name;
and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;
he is called the God of all the earth.

like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit;
can a wife of youth
be rejected forever? says your God.

For a brief moment I forsook you,
but with great compassion I will gather you.

In overflowing wrath
I hid my face from you for a moment,

I have had mercy on you,
says the LORD, your Redeemer.

This is to me like the days of Noah:
as I swore to him
that the waters of Noah would no more cover the earth,
so I have sworn
that I will not be angry with you
and will not rebuke you again.

For though the mountains may depart
and the hills be removed,
yet my lovingkindness shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,
says the LORD, who has mercy on you.

O afflicted one, storm-tossed, uncomforted!
Behold, I will set your stones in black mortar,
and lay your foundations with sapphires.

I will make your battlements of rubies,
your gates of sparkling stones,
and all your walls of precious stones.

All your children shall be taught by the LORD,
and great shall be their peace;
14
in righteousness you shall be established.
You shall be far from oppression,
for you need not fear;
and far from terror,
for it shall not come near you.
15
If anyone stirs up strife,
it is not from me;
whoever stirs up strife against you
shall fall because of you.
16
Behold, it is I who have created the smith
who blows the fire
and brings forth a weapon according to his skill;
but it is I also who have created
the destroyer to ruin it.
17
No weapon that is forged
against you shall succeed,
and every tongue that rises in accusation against you
in judgment you shall prove false.
This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD,
and their vindication from me, declares the LORD.

After the sacrifice of the Lord’s Servant in Isaiah 53, chapter 54 brings a message of hope and restoration. Jerusalem, described as a barren and forsaken woman, is now told to shout for joy and enlarge the place of her dwelling, because her children will be many.
