he who is splendid in his apparel,
who strides forward in the greatness of his strength?”
“It is I, who speak in righteousness,

and your garments like those of one who treads the winepress?”

“I have trodden the winepress alone,
and from among the peoples no one was with me!
I trod down the nations in my anger,
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood spattered on my garments,
and all my clothing was stained.

For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and the year of my redemption had come.

I looked, but there was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold.
Then my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath, it upheld me.

I trampled the peoples in my anger,
broke them in my wrath,
and poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

I will recount the lovingkindnesses of the LORD,
the glorious deeds of the LORD,
according to all that the LORD has done for us,
and the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has shown them according to his compassion
and according to the greatness of his lovingkindness.

For he said, “Surely they are my people,
children who will not deal falsely,”
and so he became their Savior

in all their distress.
It was not a messenger or an angel,
but he himself saved them;
in his love and in his pity he redeemed them.
He lifted them up and carried them
all the days of old.

But they rebelled
and grieved his Holy Spirit;
therefore he turned to be their enemy,
and he himself fought against them.

Then they remembered the days of old,
the days of Moses, his servant:
Where is he who brought them up out of the sea
with the shepherds of his flock?
Where is he who put
his Holy Spirit within them;

who by his glorious arm
went at Moses’ right hand;
who divided the waters before them
to make for himself an everlasting name;

who led them through the depths
like a horse in the wilderness?
They did not stumble,
14
like cattle going down into the valley.
The Spirit of the LORD gave them rest.
So you led your people
to make for yourself a glorious name.
15
Look down from heaven and see
from your holy and glorious dwelling!
Where are your zeal and your might,
the stirring of your heart and your compassion?
Do not hold yourself back!”

Surely Abraham does not know us,
and Israel does not acknowledge us.
You, O LORD, are our Father;
from of old Your name is “Our Redeemer.”

O LORD, why do You let us wander from Your ways,
and why do You harden our hearts so that we do not fear You?
Return for the sake of Your servants,
for the tribes that are Your inheritance!

Why have the wicked trampled Your holy place,
and our adversaries have trodden down Your sanctuary?

We have become like those over whom You never ruled,
like those who were never called by Your name.

Isaiah 63 presents two sides of God’s character: holy judgment and compassionate steadfast love. The opening section describes a hero from Edom whose garments are stained with blood — the Lord Himself treading out judgment on the enemy. Yet the middle and ending sections turn to a reminder of God’s steadfast love toward Israel. The prophet recalls all the mighty works of God and pleads that the Lord would again show His mercy and presence.
