Jacob is known in the Bible as a shrewd, even deceitful figure in his youth. He deceived Esau, his brother, for the birthright (Genesis 25:29-34) and later deceived his father Isaac to receive the blessing (Genesis 27:18-29). From his early story, we see someone who relied on self-strength, cleverness, and tactics to get what he wanted. Yet Jacob’s life journey did not stop there. God did not let Jacob remain the same, but worked in him until his heart was changed.
One important moment came when Jacob had to face Esau again, after years of running away. He was filled with fear, because he knew the mistakes of his past. By the Jabbok River, Jacob prayed and wrestled with a Person whom we later understand to be the angel of the Lord (Genesis 32:24-30). That struggle was not merely physical, but a deep inner struggle. There Jacob said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me” (Genesis 32:26).
That event changed everything. Jacob’s name was changed to Israel, which means “he struggles with God and prevails.” From someone who relied on deception, he became a person who realized that true blessing comes from the Lord, not from his own cleverness.
From Jacob, we learn:
- God can use a messy past to shape a new heart. No failure or mistake is too great for God’s grace.
- The process of change often happens through struggle. The heart is not changed through comfort, but through moments when we truly surrender.
- Change begins with humility. The once-proud Jacob finally learned to acknowledge his dependence on God.
Perhaps we also feel like Jacob: there are old parts of life that are still hard to change. Yet the good news is, the Lord does not give up on us. He is able to make us new creations if we are willing to surrender. Just like Jacob, our hearts can be changed into hearts that are gentler, more humble, and closer to God.
Lord, I am grateful that You do not give up on me, even though I often fall in weakness. Change my heart as You changed Jacob’s, so that I no longer rely on my own strength, but live surrendered to You. Shape me into the person You desire me to be. Amen.
