When we hear the name Abraham, what often comes to mind is a great man of faith. The Bible calls him “the father of all who believe” (Romans 4:16). Yet when we look more closely at his life story, Abraham was not a perfect person. He was afraid, he made wrong decisions, and several times he tried to “help” God in his own way. But behind all his weaknesses, God still trusted him and used his life for a great plan.
One clear example is when Abraham went to Egypt during a famine. Because he was afraid of being killed, he said that Sarah, his wife, was his sister (Genesis 12:11-13). That was clearly a mistake, because he did not trust that God was able to protect them. Not to mention when he and Sarah tried to take a shortcut through Hagar to have a child (Genesis 16:1-4). From a human point of view, this action reflected a lack of patience and faith.
Yet what is amazing is that the Bible still records: “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6). This is what made Abraham different. He was not perfect, but his heart still trusted God, and that trust was pleasing in the Lord’s sight.
What can we learn from Abraham?
- God is not looking for perfect people, but for people who are willing to believe. Often we feel unworthy because of our weaknesses, yet God actually wants to work through our imperfections.
- Faith is tested over time. Abraham had to wait for decades before God’s promise about descendants was fulfilled. Believing is not just saying “amen,” but remaining faithful while waiting even when we have not yet seen the result.
- Past mistakes do not cancel God’s promises. Even though Abraham had taken wrong steps, God remained faithful to His word.
Our lives are often filled with failures or imperfect decisions too. But faith is not about never failing; it is about choosing to trust God again even after we have fallen. The Lord is pleased with a heart that continues to hold on to Him.
Lord, I thank You because You are a faithful God even though I am often imperfect. Teach me to keep believing like Abraham, even when I have not yet seen Your promise fulfilled. Help me to learn patience, trust, and complete surrender to You. Amen.
